This position is based in the Central Inpatient Pharmacy and supports the entire UNC Medical Center, including all six hospitals. We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and adaptable Pharmacy Technician who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
In this vital role, you will contribute to high-impact patient care by supporting the preparation, distribution, and timely delivery of medications to patient care units, surgical suites, and emergency departments. The position requires precision, strong teamwork, and resilience.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop a broad range of pharmacy technician skills and grow professionally within a leading academic medical center. Candidates should be prepared for a rigorous workflow and be committed to patient safety, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.
This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.
7-on 7-off schedule:

  • 1st Shift Thursday Night (6:30pm-7:00am) 12hr. shift.
  • 2nd Shift Friday Night (6:30pm-7:00am) 12hr. shift.
  • 3rd Shift Saturday Night (6:30pm-7:00am) 12hr. shift.
  • 4th Shift Sunday Night (8:30pm-7:00am) 10hr. shift.
  • 5th Shift Monday Night (8:30pm-7:00am) 10hr. shift.
  • 6th Shift Tuesday Night (8:30pm-7:00am) 10hr. shift.
  • 7th Shift Wednesday Night (8:30pm-7:00am) 10hr. shift.
  • 7 days off
  • Repeat 7 days on schedule

Responsibilities:
1. Compounds and/or prepares medications (sterile products, oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) including high-risk medication processes as defined by the entity, as authorized by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
2. Delivers exchanges medications to the respective patient area and returns unused medications to the pharmacy.
3. Documents pharmaceutical activities including patient billing for medications and equipment, quality control requirements, etc. using automated and paper systems. Ensures accuracy of data.
4. Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy services such as medication delivery, drug information, etc.
5. Operates and supports automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications for individual patients, according to pharmacist and physician orders.
6. Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory, and completes expiration date management.
7. Assists with training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions.
8. Contributes to process improvement projects.
9. Completes regulatory compliance inspection of medication storage areas, including inspections and/or controlled substance inventories, USP797 and other regulatory documentation as required.

Education Requirements:
• None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred. Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• Registration as a technician with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program. If currently enrolled, an NCBOP Pharmacy Intern registration may be accepted.
• CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program; if enrolled, this can be waived for the duration of the PharmD program.
Professional Experience Requirements:
• Prior pharmacy technician experience is preferred.
