Endpoint Management information

What jobs will be left by 2030?

By 2030, roles in endpoint management such as system administrators and IT support specialists will continue to be essential, though automation and AI tools are expected to handle routine tasks. Jobs requiring advanced cybersecurity skills, cloud management, and expertise in endpoint security tools will remain in demand as organizations prioritize data protection and device management.

What does an endpoint manager do?

An endpoint manager is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the security, configuration, and performance of devices such as computers, mobile devices, and servers within an organization. They often use management tools like endpoint detection and response (EDR) software and require knowledge of network security, operating systems, and device policies. The role involves ensuring devices are compliant with security standards and troubleshooting issues as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Endpoint Management Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Endpoint Management Specialist, you need expertise in IT administration, operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux), and strong troubleshooting skills, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (SCCM), Intune, JAMF, and relevant certifications such as CompTIA or Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential for collaborating with teams and resolving user issues. These skills ensure secure, efficient device management and support organizational productivity in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

How much do endpoint administrators make?

Endpoint administrators typically earn a median annual salary between $70,000 and $100,000, depending on experience, certifications, and location. They manage and secure endpoint devices using tools like Microsoft Endpoint Manager or SCCM and often require knowledge of security protocols and operating systems.

What is the difference between Endpoint Management vs Network Administrator?

AspectEndpoint ManagementNetwork Administrator
Primary FocusManaging and securing end-user devices like laptops, smartphones, and tabletsMaintaining and troubleshooting network infrastructure such as routers, switches, and servers
Required SkillsDevice management, security protocols, endpoint security toolsNetwork protocols, routing, switching, network security
Work EnvironmentIT support teams, device management platforms, enterprise environmentsNetwork operations centers, enterprise networks, data centers
CertificationsCompTIA Security+, Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop AdministratorCisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+

While both roles involve IT security and infrastructure, Endpoint Management focuses on securing and managing end-user devices, whereas Network Administrators oversee the broader network infrastructure. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right roles for their IT needs.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Endpoint Management, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Endpoint Management often encounter challenges such as managing diverse device types, ensuring consistent security updates, and supporting remote or hybrid users. Staying current with evolving operating systems and software versions, as well as responding to security threats, are also ongoing concerns. To address these challenges, it's important to implement standardized configuration policies, utilize centralized management tools like Microsoft Intune or VMware Workspace ONE, and maintain clear communication with end-users and IT teams. Regular training and proactive monitoring can help mitigate risks and improve overall endpoint security and performance.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

In the field of endpoint management, senior roles such as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) or IT Director can reach or exceed a $300,000 annual salary, especially with extensive experience, certifications, and leadership responsibilities. High-level cybersecurity, cloud architecture, and enterprise IT management positions also tend to offer salaries in this range for experienced professionals.

What is endpoint management?

Endpoint management refers to the processes and tools used to monitor, manage, and secure devices such as laptops, desktops, smartphones, and tablets connected to a corporate network. The goal is to ensure that all endpoints comply with organizational policies, receive necessary updates, and are protected against security threats. Effective endpoint management helps IT teams maintain device health, automate software deployments, and respond quickly to vulnerabilities, improving both security and productivity.

Your Next Great Adventure Awaits!

Leidos is looking for a Unified Endpoint Management - Engineering Lead to support a large program within the Department of Justice.

The Engineering Lead will be responsible for leading a team of Unified Endpoint Management engineers with primary responsibility for managing the end user computing environment; to include workstations, printers, mobile devices, VTC, and telephony.

The Engineering Lead will directly responsible for administering the end-user computing environment, and managing a team of two endpoint engineers. The workstation environment is primarily Windows 11, managed through Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM). Main areas of responsibility within the end-user computing environment include maintaining the image, conducting regular security patching, testing and deploying applications as requested and approved, validating new hardware, and developing and implementing refreshes of both hardware and operating systems.

In this role, you will lead technical efforts related to the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of the end-user environment at an enterprise-level. You will also be responsible for developing scripts to automate processes and improve efficiency. This role combines hands-on technical work with leadership in guiding and mentoring a team, ensuring the smooth execution of endpoint management tasks and services.

This work is located onsite in the DC area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the administration and support of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), managing software deployments, updates, patches, and configurations across the organization.

  • Develop and maintain MECM configurations and collections for efficient deployment of operating systems, applications, and patches.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to MECM clients, deployment failures, and other endpoint-related issues.

  • Monitor and maintain MECM infrastructure and ensure it meets organizational needs for scalability, security, and performance.

  • Lead the implementation and configuration of AdminStudio to support application packaging, deployment, and software virtualization.

  • Collaborate with application owners to create, test, and deploy application packages in AdminStudio.

  • Ensure compatibility of applications with endpoint systems and manage packaging processes to streamline deployment.

  • Develop, test, and maintain scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Batch, VBScript) to automate system management tasks such as software deployments, configuration changes, and system updates.

  • Use scripting to improve efficiency in managing endpoint devices, reduce manual intervention, and ensure consistency across deployments.

  • Work with other team members to identify areas where automation and scripting can improve workflow efficiency.

  • Work closely with security teams to ensure endpoints are compliant with security policies, patches, and software updates.

  • Support endpoint configuration for compliance monitoring and reporting.

  • Ensure all endpoints are adequately protected from vulnerabilities and potential threats.

  • Create and maintain documentation for MECM configurations, packaging processes, and automation scripts.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or in a related field and 5+ years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience. Additional years of experience will be considered and/or accepted in lieu of a degree.

  • 7+ years of experience in endpoint management, with at least 5 years of hands-on experience supporting Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM) and AdminStudio OR similar tools.

  • Proven experience developing and maintaining scripts for endpoint automation (e.g., PowerShell, Batch, VBScript).

  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, and other endpoint management technologies.

  • Experience with endpoint security management, including software patching and compliance reporting.

  • Familiarity with SQL queries for reporting and troubleshooting in MECM.

  • Knowledge of Windows Server and Windows OS configurations and management.

  • The individual selected to this position must successfully complete and maintain a Public Trust security investigation by the government.

  • US Citizenship.

Additional Attributes That Will Help Make One Successful:

  • Strong troubleshooting skills for resolving deployment failures, configuration issues, and system performance problems.

  • Ability to think critically and identify solutions that improve processes and enhance operational efficiency.

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills to guide junior engineers and cross-functional teams.

  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with business stakeholders and technical teams.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Certifications:

    • Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate or other Microsoft certifications related to endpoint management.

    • AdminStudio Certification or similar packaging tool certification.

    • ITIL Foundation or similar IT service management certifications.

  • Familiarity with Power BI or other reporting tools for generating endpoint management metrics and dashboards.
