As the Safety Supervisor, you will oversee daily safety operations at the CCS Basic Needs – Salt Lake (BN-SL) campus while serving as an active, hands-on member of the Safety Team. You will directly supervise Safety Specialists, providing leadership, coaching, scheduling support, incident management, and training, and step in to cover shifts during absences, high-volume days, and staffing shortages. You will work closely with the Basic Needs Operations Manager and other location leadership to maintain a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment for clients, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Directly supervise Safety Specialists, including hiring input, performance management, and corrective action.
  2. Provide leadership and day-to-day direction to Safety Specialists.
  3. Respond to and coordinate emergency situations, serving as incident commander when needed.
  4. Lead de-escalation efforts during client conflicts or behavioral incidents.
  5. Coordinate building evacuations and emergency response procedures.
  6. Complete and review incident reports and maintain safety logs and documentation.
  7. Train and coach Safety Specialists, including onboarding new team members.
  8. Conduct routine safety inspections and facility rounds.

  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is based at the CCS Basic Needs – Salt Lake (BN-SL) campus and involves regular walking, standing, and facility patrols both indoors and outdoors, in all seasons and weather conditions, along with the ability to respond quickly to safety concerns and emergencies across campus buildings and grounds.

This role requires the physical ability to perform CPR and other emergency medical response, including kneeling, bending, and sustained physical exertion; to lift, carry, or assist in moving individuals or objects as needed during an emergency; and to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods across a shift.

This position regularly interacts with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use, and trauma, and requires the ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and apply a trauma-informed approach during emergencies, including de-escalation situations that may involve close physical proximity to individuals in crisis. De-escalation may require the use of personal safety and safe escort techniques; this role does not carry weapons or use restraint equipment. The pace can be fast-moving and unpredictable, with the need to shift quickly between routine duties and emergency response.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

Qualifications

  1. Required Qualifications
    1. High school diploma or GED required.
    2. Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to apply a trauma-informed approach.
    3. Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergencies.
    4. Ability to work respectfully and effectively with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance use disorders.
    5. Prior experience directly supervising or leading staff, including responsibility for performance conversations, corrective action, or staff development.
  2. Preferred Qualifications
    1. Two years of experience in security, safety, behavioral health, shelter operations, corrections, EMS, military service, or a related field.
    2. Experience with staff scheduling and coverage planning.
    3. Familiarity with HR processes related to hiring input and performance documentation.

Additional Requirements

  1. Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.
  2. Must complete the CCS Safety Academy training program (including CPI de-escalation, trauma-informed care, Mental Health First Aid, QPR suicide prevention, Naloxone administration, CPR/AED/First Aid, and Stop the Bleed) within 90-days of hire, and complete recertification as required.
  3. This position is scheduled to work Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and must maintain flexibility to serve as secondary fill-in coverage for the Safety Team as needed, including outside standard scheduled hours.
