Position Description Summary:
The Art Therapy Program of The George Washington University in Washington, DC invites applications for a full-time contract faculty position. The position is a twelve month appointment to begin as early as Summer 2026.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of an innovative art therapy program at The George Washington University. Our program is known for our: trauma coursework integrating current research with clinical work in our on-site Art Therapy Clinic; international focus with reciprocal-learning opportunities in India, Croatia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates; diverse internship opportunities with over 100 sites; dedicated classroom facilities, studio, and Art Therapy Gallery space; and our history as one of the oldest art therapy programs established by founders of the art therapy field.
We are looking for exceptional candidates who are interested in joining a faculty team with varied interests and work experiences. The successful candidate will contribute in teaching, assisting with
accreditation and program assessment documentation, and advising students. There is opportunity for overseeing student culminating projects and international teaching. Each Professor is expected to deepen their involvement in presenting, publishing, research, and creative endeavors. The Professor will work closely with the Director of the Art Therapy Program, our diverse student body, the faculty, and the GW community. We are a CAAHEP accredited, in-person, 12-month program. We are seeking to attract culturally and academically diverse faculty interested in becoming part of a cohesive team.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching, supervising and advising student culminating projects, assisting with accreditation and program assessment documentation, ongoing scholarly and creative work, initiating community collaborations, programmatic work, and service to university and professional organizations.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Master's degree in creative arts therapy or Doctoral degree in creative arts therapy, clinical psychology, counseling psychology or closely related field
• Registration and Board Certification as an Art Therapist (ATR-BC)
• A minimum of 5 years of post-Masters clinical experience
• A minimum of 3 years of teaching art therapy coursework and course development at the graduate level
• Expertise in a specific area of art therapy
• Ability to work independently and collegially as part of a cohesive team to achieve GW's programmatic goals
Advertised Salary:
$90,000-$95,000 (Salary will be commensurate with experience.)

Other Information:
GW Art Therapy Program is located in Alexandria in off-campus space that provides two large studio classrooms with the latest technological equipment and plentiful art supplies, an Open Art Studio for students and faculty, an onsite community Clinic with video split-screen recording capabilities, an Art Therapy Gallery with three exhibits per year, an Art Therapy Library, and computer classroom availability. Our Program includes trauma focused course work and clinical work, international collaborations and training options (India, Croatia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, and expanding), and programmatic research in the Clinic.
Our student body is diverse (gender, race, ethnicity, age, experience) and we provide accessible morning and afternoon/evening tracks. We have approximately 10 adjunct faculty each semester who provide specific clinical expertise in the areas they teach.
The full-time faculty are a cohesive group focused on a high level of education, continual improvement, collegiality, and continued professional scholarship and creativity.
