An EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) Engineer is responsible for ensuring that electronic devices and systems comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations and standards. They analyze, test, and mitigate interference issues to prevent disruptions in electronic communication and functionality. Their role often involves designing shielding, filtering solutions, and grounding techniques to minimize EMI. EMI Engineers work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. They also collaborate with design teams to develop products that meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
As an EMI Engineer, your day-to-day responsibilities often include analyzing electronic devices for potential electromagnetic interference, conducting laboratory tests using specialized equipment, and documenting test results. You will collaborate closely with design engineers to resolve compliance issues and suggest improvements to product designs. Additionally, EMI Engineers are frequently involved in preparing technical reports for regulatory submissions and advising cross-functional teams on best practices for EMI mitigation. This hands-on, collaborative environment offers variety and the opportunity to see your work directly impact product development.
To thrive as an EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, signal analysis, and EMI/EMC standards, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as spectrum analyzers, EMC test chambers, and simulation software, along with certifications like iNARTE EMC Engineer, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for identifying interference issues, ensuring regulatory compliance, and efficiently collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we're all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?
In this position...
As a Hardware Engineer in Ford's Advanced Networking Group, you will own signal integrity and hardware robustness for highspeed invehicle communication links. This team identifies and develops optimal networking technologies for Ford's nextgeneration electrical architecture-introducing new solutions and enhancing existing ones-to reduce overall system cost while ensuring electrical robustness for automotive use.
You will author Layer 1-2 networking specifications and design verification documents used across all Ford vehicle programs, lead hardware design reviews, and perform simulations and lab validation for network interfaces. Depending on experience and qualifications, this position may be filled at the Senior Hardware Engineer level.
You'll have...
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
5+ years of progressive experience in electronic hardware design, with significant focus on complex highspeed digital and mixedsignal designs.
2+ years of experience with SI simulation and/or PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics, Cadence Allegro, Siemens HyperLynx, Cadence Sigrity, Ansys HFSS/SIwave, Polar Instruments, etc.
2+ years of handson experience with electrical test equipment; proficient with oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers (VNA), time domain reflectometers (TDR), and circuit board rework.
Familiarity with industrystandard automotive communication interfaces (e.g., CAN, LIN, SerDes, PCIe, Ethernet).
Proficiency in transmission line theory, Sparameters, bit error rate (BER) testing, crosstalk, characteristic impedance, eye diagrams, and timedomain analysis.
Strong understanding of EMC/EMI principles in automotive applications.
Background in highreliability electronics designed for highvolume production, including use of DFMEA and worstcase analysis (WCA) to develop robust designs.
Even better, you may have...
PhD with 3+ years of relevant hardware/SI experience, or Master's degree with 7+ years of relevant hardware/SI experience.
5+ years of experience with SI simulation and PCB design tools.
Indepth knowledge of transmission line and electromagnetic theory.
Automotive networking experience (e.g., 10BASET1S, 100/1000BASET1, MultiGig T1, GMSL/FPDLink, CAN FD, LIN).
Deep understanding of typical vehicle EE architectures and automotive development processes.
Experience with networking hardware, network architectures/topologies, data rates, configurations, and protocols.
Experience with EMC/EMI standards and testing (e.g., Ford FMC 1278, ISO 7637 series, CISPR 25, CISPR 12).
Experience capturing and authoring requirements and technical specifications.
Experience using vehicle diagnostic tools to troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve network issues.
Experience working with automotive standards organizations such as IEEE, SAE, Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA), and the OPEN Alliance.
Selfstarter who takes ownership of loosely defined goals, drives clarity where needed, and collaborates effectively across functions to deliver results.
