What are emerging markets?

Emerging markets refer to countries or regions that are experiencing rapid economic growth and industrialization but have not yet reached the status of developed economies. These markets often offer higher potential returns for investors due to their growth prospects but also come with increased risks such as political instability, currency fluctuations, and less mature financial systems. Common examples of emerging markets include countries like Brazil, India, China, and South Africa. Professionals working with emerging markets analyze economic trends, investment opportunities, and potential risks to help businesses and investors make informed decisions.

What are some common challenges professionals face when working in emerging markets roles?

Professionals in Emerging Markets roles often navigate challenges such as rapidly changing regulatory environments, currency volatility, and varying levels of market transparency. Building strong local relationships and adapting strategies to fit diverse cultural and economic contexts are essential. Success in this field requires resilience, flexibility, and a keen understanding of both global trends and local dynamics, as market conditions can shift quickly and unpredictably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an emerging markets analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Emerging Markets Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a background in finance or economics, and a deep understanding of global markets. Proficiency with financial modeling software, Bloomberg Terminal, and data analysis tools is commonly required, along with relevant certifications like the CFA. Exceptional communication, cultural awareness, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for interpreting trends and building relationships in diverse regions. These abilities enable analysts to accurately assess risks and opportunities, making informed investment decisions in rapidly changing environments.

What is the difference between Emerging Markets vs International Markets?

About PayJoy

PayJoy, a Public Benefit Corporation, is a mission-first credit provider dedicated to helping under-served customers in emerging markets to achieve financial stability and success. Our patented technology for secured credit provides an on-ramp for new customers to enter the credit system. Through PayJoyโ€™s point-of-sale financing and card offerings, customers gain access to a modern quality of life. PayJoyโ€™s credit also allows our customers to seize opportunities as micro-entrepreneurs, and acts as insurance for tough times. Through our cutting-edge machine learning, data science, and anti-fraud AI, we have served over 18 million customers as of 2025 while achieving solid profitability for sustainable growth.

This role

PayJoy is seeking an experienced and innovative global collections leader to set the strategy and scale up our efforts to help customers successfully manage repayment.

As a global Fintech, we operate at scale across Latin American, Africa, and Asia, serving tens of millions of customers. We are a registered Public Benefit Corporation and balance positive customer benefit with for-profit company scale. This leader will help us fulfill our mission to serve our customers by delivering strong portfolio performance, ensuring fair customer treatment, and building long-term customers relationships and lifetime value.

This is a cross-functional role reporting to the COO and co-founder and will drive meaningful bottom-line impact for the business.

Key responsibilities
  • Define and execute PayJoyโ€™s global collections strategy to deliver predictable portfolio performance across diverse markets
  • Develop segmentation, implementation, and testing capabilities that improve overall repayment, cure rates, cost to collect, and customer lifetime value.
  • Partner closely with global Marketing, Operations, Credit & Risk, Data Science, Compliance, Product, and Engineering teams to ensure a seamless experience for our customers and leverage each groupโ€™s core capabilities.
  • Select and manage external collections partners where appropriate, establishing rigorous standards for performance, customer experience, compliance, and quality.
  • Ensure collections practices are fair, compliant, locally appropriate, and aligned with PayJoyโ€™s commitments as a Public Benefit Corporation.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in consumer collections, credit operations, loan servicing, or a closely related field, including leadership responsibility for strategy and performance.
  • Proven success managing high-volume, small-balance consumer credit portfolios across multiple countries or distinct markets, ideally serving thin-file or underbanked customers.
  • Strong analytical and technical judgment, with experience using data, segmentation, automation, and experimentation to improve collections outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage external collections partners while maintaining strong compliance and customer-experience standards.
  • Experience in fintech, digital lending, device financing, or emerging markets is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese is a plus but not required.

$258,000 - $279,000 a year
