What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMC Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMC Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility standards, and experience with test procedures, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with EMC test equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, signal generators), specialized software, and certifications like iNARTE EMC are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you interpret results and collaborate with product development teams. These skills ensure products meet regulatory requirements and function reliably in their intended electromagnetic environments.

How does an EMC Test Engineer typically interact with product development teams during the testing process?

EMC Test Engineers work closely with product development teams to ensure that products meet electromagnetic compatibility standards. They collaborate during the design phase to identify potential EMC issues, provide guidance on mitigation strategies, and conduct pre-compliance testing. Throughout the process, they communicate test results and recommendations, helping teams implement necessary design changes. This collaborative environment ensures products are both compliant and market-ready, and it offers opportunities for engineers to contribute meaningfully to the overall development cycle.

What are EMC Test Engineers?

EMC Test Engineers are professionals who specialize in testing and evaluating electronic devices to ensure they comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. Their role involves assessing products to confirm they do not emit excessive electromagnetic interference (EMI) and are not susceptible to external EMI, which can affect performance or safety. They work in laboratories using specialized equipment to run tests and document results, often helping manufacturers achieve regulatory certification for their products. EMC Test Engineers play a critical role in the development of electronics used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Emc Test Engineers typically earn salaries below $200,000 annually, with higher earnings possible for senior or specialized roles, especially in high-cost living areas or with advanced certifications. Achieving a $500,000 salary as an electrical engineer is uncommon and usually requires executive-level positions, extensive experience, or ownership of a consulting firm. Most electrical engineers do not reach this income level through standard roles alone.

What is the difference between Emc Test Engineer vs Emc Test Technician?

AspectEmc Test EngineerEmc Test Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field, certifications like CEM or EMC-related trainingTechnical diploma or associate degree, hands-on training in EMC testing
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, testing facilities, collaborative with engineersTesting labs, equipment setup, data collection
ResponsibilitiesDesign test plans, analyze results, troubleshoot EMC issuesOperate testing equipment, record data, prepare test reports
Industry UsageUsed across electronics, automotive, aerospace industriesCommonly found in manufacturing and testing facilities

In summary, Emc Test Engineers focus on designing tests, analyzing data, and troubleshooting EMC issues, requiring higher education and certifications. Emc Test Technicians primarily operate testing equipment and collect data, supporting the testing process with practical skills. Both roles are essential in EMC testing environments but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

Job description

What if you could work on highly specialized medical technology where electrical design decisions directly impact real-world patient care — while also getting hands-on ownership across RF systems, embedded electronics, next-generation product development and manufacturing support?

A growing medical device company in the Orlando area is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join a small, highly collaborative engineering team developing advanced electro-mechanical and patient monitoring technologies used in demanding clinical environments.

This is an onsite role based in Orlando, FL, with daily interaction across engineering, manufacturing and leadership teams. The environment is fast-paced, highly technical and best suited for someone who enjoys broad ownership, hands-on engineering work and solving complex real-world problems rather than being siloed into a narrow specialty.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead electrical design, development, testing and sustaining engineering activities for next-generation medical devices
  • Design and prototype analog and digital circuitry, embedded hardware and processor-based systems
  • Develop and support RF and wireless systems, including Bluetooth and related communication technologies
  • Support EMC/EMI and FCC compliance testing activities at external test labs
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical engineering, manufacturing and regulatory teams throughout the product lifecycle
  • Review PCB layouts and provide guidance on shielding, grounding, signal integrity and noise mitigation
  • Troubleshoot and debug complex hardware and system-level issues
  • Support manufacturing and production teams with root cause analysis, design improvements and product releases
  • Generate technical documentation including design specifications, architecture documents, test reports and engineering change documentation
  • Assist with risk management activities, regulatory documentation and product compliance efforts
  • Participate in development of next-generation products as well as sustaining support for released systems

What They’re Looking For

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering
  • Several years of hands-on electrical engineering experience in commercial product development environments
  • Strong experience with:
  • Analog and digital circuit design
  • Embedded hardware systems
  • Microprocessor-based designs
  • Signal acquisition and conditioning
  • Power conversion and battery-powered systems
  • PCB design and layout review
  • Experience with RF/wireless systems and related testing
  • Familiarity with EMC/EMI mitigation techniques and FCC compliance
  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging hardware in real-world environments
  • Strong understanding of full product lifecycle development from concept through manufacturing support
  • Ability to work across multiple projects and priorities in a fast-moving environment
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

Preferred Experience

  • Medical device industry experience
  • Experience working within regulated environments such as ISO 13485 or FDA-regulated development
  • Familiarity with IEC 60601 standards
  • Experience supporting external compliance or certification testing
  • Exposure to risk management methodologies and design controls
  • Experience with LabVIEW or related lab/testing tools

Environment & Culture

  • Highly collaborative onsite engineering environment
  • Small engineering team with broad technical exposure
  • Hands-on, execution-focused culture
  • Opportunity to work closely with experienced engineering leadership
  • Fast-paced development environment with a mix of new product development and sustaining engineering
  • Direct involvement in solving complex technical challenges across hardware, RF, embedded systems and manufacturing support

This role is based onsite daily in Orlando, Florida.
