Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is seeking a Senior Automation & Electrical Engineer to join our team in Pueblo, Colorado. As a key member of the maintenance organization, this role is responsible for improving the availability, reliability, and utilization of electrical and automation systems to support the production and shipment of high-quality steel products. The Senior Automation & Electrical Engineer will develop and implement innovative solutions to enhance steel manufacturing processes, optimize equipment performance, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This position collaborates closely with production, maintenance, engineering, and other plant departments to identify opportunities for improvement, resolve technical challenges, and ensure safe, efficient, and consistent operations. The successful candidate will lead efforts to implement sustainable solutions that improve equipment reliability, process efficiency, and product quality while supporting rolling mills, steelmaking production, and maintenance operations within a highly automated steel manufacturing environment.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the lead technical resource for automation and electrical systems supporting Steelmaking, Rolling Mill, and Maintenance operations in a highly automated steel manufacturing environment.
  • Provide advanced expertise in process control systems, including Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Casting Machine, Re-Heat Furnace, and Rolling Mill automation applications.
  • Lead the design, configuration, optimization, and troubleshooting of PLC, HMI, and industrial automation systems, with an emphasis on Rockwell Automation platforms.
  • Oversee the commissioning, startup, maintenance, and performance optimization of AC/DC drives, motor control systems, and related electrical equipment.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, product quality, throughput, equipment reliability, energy efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Develop and implement control strategies, monitoring tools, and key performance indicators (KPIs), while integrating plant automation systems with business and manufacturing information systems.
  • Lead the resolution of complex electrical, automation, and process control issues, ensuring timely corrective actions and sustainable solutions.
  • Manage and execute automation and electrical engineering projects, including system design, documentation, upgrades, and capital improvement initiatives, while mentoring technical personnel and supporting cross-functional teams.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and provide technical leadership during emergency situations, equipment failures, and critical business needs to ensure operational continuity.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical/Electronic or Mechanical Engineering or Automated Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Minimum 7 years working experience in electrical and automation engineering
  • Heavy industrial processes, electrical and automation experience, preferably in a steel making facility.
  • Experience with and working knowledge with Medium Voltage Drives

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Working knowledge with PLC and HMI software and hardware (preferably Rockwell Automation equipment), Medium and Low voltage drives, Smart Motor Control Centers, Arc Regulation Systems and Instrumentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Proficiency in electrical and automation troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow standards in automation and control software disciplines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Adept at working with technical manuals.


Compensation: $120,000 - $140,000

Open & Closing Dates: 08/04/2026 - 09/01/2026
