The Electrical Commissioning & Startup Technician provides on-site leadership and technical expertise for the safe commissioning, testing, and startup of electrical systems across new plants, retrofit projects, and turnarounds. Supporting Air Products' facilities throughout the Americas, this role focuses on utilities and power generation systems, ensuring reliable construction and startup across technologies such as hydrogen, syngas, gasification, ammonia, and ASU plants. The technician will lead electrical testing, implement safety procedures, tackle electrical and instrumentation equipment, and collaborate closely with Engineering, Operations, and global CSU teams. The role requires significant travel (80-85%), strong handson field experience, proficiency with electrical testing equipment and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, NETA), and the ability to mentor site teams. Successful candidates will complete an 18-24month qualification program and help drive consistent global commissioning practices.

Required Skills / Abilities:
  • EH&S of the commissioning team and others working at site:
  • Leaders in Safety at the site
  • Ensure commissioning activities are carryout according to Air Products safety procedures, ensuring important metrics are met or exceeded.
  • Ensure the accurate types and levels of electrical PPE are available on site and all team members are trained in the accurate use.
  • Understand and implement the Air Products electrical isolation and LOTO procedures associated with construction, commissioning, and operation of the electrical distribution system.
Professional:
  • Promote an atmosphere of team spirit through good example, open communication, good listening, and timely problem resolutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety performance, reliability, and cost of quality goals.
  • Establish & manage relationships with regional Engineering and Operations Organizations
  • Develop and support positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Participate in Regional and Global meetings as required to resolve standards being used in the industry and apply them to the role.
  • Support, mentor, and develop others in the CSU Team and AP Operations located at the site.
Minimum Hiring Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent experience and formal technical training in electrical construction, maintenance, and testing is required.
  • 5 years of experience in the Electrical Operations or Commissioning Field.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Broad knowledge of technologies supported, electrical standards, electrical safety systems, and engineering and operating procedures a plus.
  • Able to work in a team environment and maintain a positive disposition even in times of high stress and workload.
  • Tackle and make good and timely decisions in high stress situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, commission, startup, solve, assess, and resolve various plant related issues.
  • Interpret single line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, construction drawings/ details, and other electrical user documentation.
  • Experience and shown understanding of electrical construction and industry standards such as NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC) and NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace
  • Experience, and knowledge of electrical distribution system equipment.
  • Experience with setting up and programming various electrical protection relays, particularly SEL and Multilin
  • Experience with electrical testing and procedures as well national testing standards (NETA) and test equipment including, but not limited to, multi-function meter, insulation resistance tester (megger), low resistance ohmmeter (Ductor), high potential dielectric withstand equipment (hi-pot), current injection units and sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA) equipment
  • Working, hands-on experience, and troubleshooting knowledge of E&I equipment including: DCS systems, Fiber optic communications, low voltage (<600V) switchgear, low voltage motor control centers, low and medium voltage induction motors, diesel generators, low voltage power and control cables, DC battery systems, uninterruptible power supplies, and electrical protection relays.
  • Ability to take on or assist with other construction and commissioning roles.
  • Based in Pennsylvania, Texas, or Louisiana is not required, but preferred.
  • The successful candidate is required to complete an 18 - 24-month training & qualification process to achieve the Air Products QEC title.
