What do students do in electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering students typically engage in coursework related to circuits, electronics, and electromagnetism, and participate in laboratory experiments to develop practical skills. They often work on projects involving designing and testing electrical systems, and may gain experience with tools like oscilloscopes and circuit simulators. Internships and research opportunities help students apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

What jobs can an engineering student get?

An electrical engineering student can pursue roles such as intern or entry-level engineer in areas like circuit design, power systems, or electronics. These positions often require knowledge of engineering principles, technical skills, and familiarity with tools like CAD software or testing equipment.

What is an Electrical Engineer Student job?

An Electrical Engineer Student job typically involves assisting professional engineers with technical tasks, research, and project development while gaining hands-on experience. Responsibilities may include circuit design, troubleshooting electrical systems, testing components, and documenting findings. These roles are often part of internships, co-op programs, or entry-level positions designed to enhance practical skills. Students in these roles work under supervision, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering problems. This experience helps prepare them for full-time engineering positions after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Electrical Engineer Student position, and why are they important?

To excel as an Electrical Engineer Student, you should have a strong grasp of physics, mathematics, and fundamental electrical engineering concepts, often supported by enrollment in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with circuit simulation software (such as MATLAB, SPICE, or Multisim), lab equipment, and basic programming skills are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication abilities help students collaborate effectively on projects and with supervisors. These skills and qualifications are crucial for successfully applying academic knowledge to real-world engineering tasks and preparing for a future professional career.

What types of projects or responsibilities can an Electrical Engineer Student expect during an internship or co-op?

Electrical Engineer Students often get hands-on experience through tasks like assisting with circuit design, conducting lab-based experiments, analyzing data, and supporting senior engineers with troubleshooting or prototype development. You may work on both individual assignments and group projects, allowing you to apply classroom concepts to real-world challenges. Collaboration with diverse engineering teams and participation in technical meetings are common, providing valuable exposure to industry standards and workflows. These experiences help build a solid foundation for future roles and expand your professional network.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Electrical engineers typically earn salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry, with median annual wages around $100,000. Reaching a $500,000 annual income usually requires advanced roles such as senior engineers, management positions, or specialized fields like power systems or aerospace, often combined with significant experience and advanced certifications. High earnings are more common in certain regions and industries with high demand for specialized skills.

What jobs can an EE student do?

Electrical engineering students can work as intern or entry-level electrical engineers, assisting with circuit design, testing, and troubleshooting. They may also find roles in technician positions, research projects, or technical support, often requiring knowledge of tools like CAD software and basic understanding of electrical systems. Job description

Description

We're on the lookout for an Electrical Engineer to join our team of teams! Our ideal candidate is a humble and confident electrical engineer with a passion for educational design, and at least seven (7) years of relevant skills and experience.

Why Work with Us?

This is the part where most job descriptions jump into the responsibilities and requirements for the role being posted - and we'll get there shortly! But we like to start with the why instead of the what.

Our purpose is helping build strong communities through educational opportunity. We focus on projects within the educational ecosystem, from Pre-K through Higher Education and spaces in our community that support lifelong learning. Our integrated team gets to work together on a wide range of project types - building design, performance engineering, communications campaigns, branding, enrollment marketing, financial analysis, projections and planning - and we're proud of the impact that our work has on the lives and trajectories of students across the United States. Will you join us?

As an Electrical Engineer at GMB you will:

  • Design, layout, and detail lighting, electrical power distribution and communications systems
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary design teams on a wide variety of projects in the K12 and Higher Education markets
  • Produce high quality technical plans, specifications, drawings and models
  • Work extensively with 3D BIM/Revit, Visual, and EasyPower
  • Independently lead and manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Design systems that are sustainable, high performing and/or US Green Building Council LEED
  • Prepare and present technical presentations to peers, project teams and clients
  • Visit project sites to assist with measuring, data collection and construction observation duties
  • Manage time and workload effectively, including the planning, organizing and prioritizing
  • May participate on other leadership and project teams.
  • Join a remote-first work environment yet have the ability to work in the field or one of our learning hubs as needed.

What type of knowledge do I need to succeed in this role?

More than a specific degree and exact number of years of experience, we're most excited about what kind of knowledge you bring. For this role, we are seeking someone with developing knowledge who works independently on individual tasks and has the ability to co-own projects with decreasing guidance.

Some components that may help indicate you are at this knowledge milestone include more tangible items like:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • 7+ years of experience in analyzing, designing and planning electrical engineering systems in buildings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively on project teams
  • Demonstrated passion for the electrical engineering and architectural engineering consulting field

What might set you apart from other candidates?

  • Licensed Professional Engineer preferred
  • Familiarity with the use of Autodesk Revit to produce Electrical design documents
  • Experience with ElumTools
  • Passion for executing project vision and identifying creative electrical design solution with clients
  • Experience in power, lighting, and communications systems for buildings as well as some experience with power distribution systems up to 25 kV
  • Motivation to lead, mentor and contribute toward team's success
  • Practiced in managing multiple projects simultaneously

We might be a great match for each other if you are:

  • A self-starter with great time management skills who thrives in an environment with team-based decision making.
  • An individual who strives to learn and grow, is motivated by their team's success and works hard to ensure it.
  • Someone who enjoys trying new ideas and constantly improving.

What you might also like to know is that:

We're an employee-owned company. This means that 100% of the ownership at GMB is held by our employees. Our creativity, skills, and expertise have a direct impact on our value and growth. Your role as a teammate will have a direct impact on the company's actions and result in a share in its profits.

GMB doesn't operate within a hierarchical pyramid structure; instead, we operate as a network of teams that come together around specific goals to achieve our overarching purpose. We think this is a better way to work and helps everyone reach their potential.

Finally, at GMB we embrace a flexible workplace that empowers each person to decide where and how they work best. Our inclusive, people-first culture encourages teams to collaborate, communicate and find fulfillment personally and professionally, regardless of location or schedule.

This is a direct hire, full time position. Salary will be commensurate with experience, including an excellent benefit package. Must have current and continuing right to work in the United States without sponsorship. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or national origin.
