Job description

Staff BESS Electrical Design Engineer (EPC) — Be the Energy Storage Expert

McCarran, NV | Full-Time | $150,000 – $195,000

The Opportunity

Battery energy storage is the fastest-growing corner of the grid — and this role puts you at the center of it. Our client, a rapidly scaling clean energy innovator, is hiring a Staff BESS Electrical Design Engineer to lead utility-scale lithium-ion storage projects from system sizing through construction. You'll be the in-house subject matter expert and Electrical Engineer of Record, designing the AC and DC systems that connect grid-scale batteries to the real world.

Why You'll Love It

  • Own the hottest tech on the grid: Utility-scale BESS from concept to commissioning
  • SME status: You're the go-to authority on energy storage, not one voice in a crowd
  • Innovation built in: Lead R&D on medium voltage DC distribution for next-gen BESS integration
  • Nevada perks: No state income tax, Reno-Tahoe at your doorstep

What You'll Do

  • Lead electrical engineering for utility-scale lithium-ion BESS — system sizing, layout, and design through construction
  • Design AC and DC systems using MV transformers, inverters, DC combiners, energy managers, and battery modules; specify and procure long-lead AC equipment
  • Develop schematics, single-lines, wiring diagrams, raceway and grounding plans, and protection strategies
  • Interface with utilities and ISO/RTOs on interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance
  • Ensure compliance with NEC 705/706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, NFPA 855, and local amendments — and lead those code reviews
  • Perform short circuit, load flow, arc flash, and coordination studies for AC and DC systems
  • Serve as Electrical Engineer of Record on assigned projects
  • Coordinate civil, structural, fire & life safety, SCADA/telecom, and DC design teams into complete IFC packages
  • Lead R&D on MV-DC distribution for integrating BESS with other sources
  • Provide construction administration — RFIs, submittals, change orders, site inspections
  • Estimate costs, manage schedules, QA/QC designs, and mentor junior engineers

What You'll Bring

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
  • Active PE (Nevada or reciprocity-eligible); NV and SC licensure within 2 months of start
  • 5+ years in solar, energy storage, or microgrids — at least 3 focused on BESS design and deployment
  • Proven interconnection and regulatory compliance expertise for BESS
  • SME-level command of NEC 705/706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, NFPA 855
  • Advanced proficiency: HOMER (or similar), ETAP/SKM, AutoCAD/Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam
  • Bonus points: PSSE/PSLF, PSCAD, SEL AcSELerator, HVDC design
  • Fluency in storage use-cases — peak shaving, load shifting, demand response, frequency response

The grid is changing. Design what's next. Apply now.
