Work EnvironmentLeads design teams, oversees project planning, and coordinates with clientsPerforms design, analysis, and testing of electrical systems
Industry UsageUsed in project management, design oversight, and team leadership rolesUsed in technical design, development, and implementation tasks

The main difference is that an Electrical Design Manager focuses on leading design teams and managing projects, while an Electrical Engineer is primarily involved in technical design and analysis. Both roles require strong electrical engineering credentials, but the manager role adds leadership and project oversight responsibilities.

Are electrical design managers in demand?

Electrical design managers are in demand due to ongoing infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, and technological advancements requiring specialized electrical systems. They typically need strong technical skills, project management experience, and relevant certifications, making them valuable in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy.

What does an electrical design manager do?

An Electrical Design Manager oversees the planning, design, and implementation of electrical systems in various projects, such as buildings, infrastructure, or manufacturing facilities. They lead a team of engineers and designers, ensuring that all electrical designs meet safety standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements. Their responsibilities also include coordinating with other engineering disciplines, managing project timelines and budgets, and providing technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle.

How does an electrical design manager typically collaborate with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders?

An Electrical Design Manager works closely with mechanical, civil, and architectural teams to ensure that electrical systems are seamlessly integrated into overall project designs. Regular coordination meetings and design reviews are common, where the manager communicates requirements, resolves conflicts, and aligns project milestones. Additionally, they often interact with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and address specific project needs. Effective collaboration and clear communication are essential skills in this role, as successful outcomes depend on cross-disciplinary teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design manager?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Manager, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, project management experience, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, electrical design tools (such as AutoCAD, Revit, or ETAP), and relevant industry standards or certifications (like PE licensure) is crucial. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage teams, coordinate across departments, and drive project success. These capabilities ensure effective design solutions, compliance with safety and quality standards, and successful project delivery.

  • Coordinate the preparation, internal review, and customer submission of technical submittals, coordination drawings, and approval packages.
  • Track customer comments, approvals, and required revisions, ensuring timely incorporation into engineering deliverables.
  • Ensure approved engineering outputs are correctly released to manufacturing systems and communicated to downstream teams.

Cross-Functional Communication
  • Serve as the primary coordination point between Busway Engineering, BIM, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, and Project Management for engineering-related activities.
  • Facilitate engineering status meetings, document action items, and follow through to closure.
  • Provide regular internal reporting on engineering status, risks, bottlenecks, and schedule impacts.
  • Support Project Managers with accurate engineering progress updates for customer-facing communication.

Schedule, Reporting & Process Support
  • Maintain and update engineering schedules to reflect current status, customer review cycles, and change impacts.
  • Compile engineering-focused project reports highlighting milestone status, approvals, and readiness for manufacturing.
  • Identify gaps, late inputs, or process breakdowns and escalate to Engineering Leadership as appropriate.
  • Assist with audits, first-of-kind reviews, or project retrospectives as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Project Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting engineering, manufacturing, or technical project execution in an industrial, electrical, or construction-related environment.
  • Experience supporting engineered-to-order (ETO) or configured product environments strongly preferred.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering project execution, documentation flow, and handoff to manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of engineering workflows, including design development, customer approvals, and release to manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical systems, preferably including busway, power distribution, or data center infrastructure.
  • Experience coordinating drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.
  • ERP experience (Oracle, SAP, or similar) preferred.
  • Smartsheet, Power BI, or similar project tracking and reporting tools are a bonus.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with strong follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple engineering workstreams and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Effective problem solver with the ability to identify risks and escalate issues early.
