What is the difference between Electrical Communication Engineering vs Electrical Power Engineering?

AspectElectrical Communication EngineeringElectrical Power Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Communication Engineering; often includes certifications in communication systemsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Power Engineering; certifications in power systems may be common
Work EnvironmentTelecommunication companies, research labs, network providersPower plants, utility companies, renewable energy firms
Industry UsageDesign and maintenance of communication systems, signal processingGeneration, transmission, and distribution of electrical power

Electrical Communication Engineering focuses on communication systems, signal processing, and networking, while Electrical Power Engineering centers on power generation and distribution. Both fields share foundational electrical principles but serve different industry needs and career paths.

What are some common challenges faced by Electrical Communication Engineers when working on large-scale projects?

Electrical Communication Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies with legacy systems, ensuring signal integrity over long distances, and managing cross-disciplinary collaboration with software and hardware teams. Working on large-scale projects also requires meticulous planning to address regulatory compliance, system scalability, and security concerns. Effective communication with stakeholders and adaptability to rapidly evolving standards are essential for overcoming these challenges and delivering successful project outcomes.

What is Electrical Communication Engineering?

Electrical Communication Engineering is a specialized branch of engineering that focuses on the design, development, and maintenance of communication systems and networks. This includes technologies such as wireless communication, fiber optics, satellite systems, and data transmission. Professionals in this field work on both the hardware and software aspects of transmitting information efficiently and securely. Electrical Communication Engineering is vital in enabling modern communication infrastructure, including the internet, mobile networks, and broadcasting systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Communication Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Communication Engineer, you need a strong background in circuit design, digital and analog communications, and signal processing, typically supported by a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like MATLAB, CAD software, and industry standards such as IEEE protocols is often required, along with relevant certifications like Cisco’s CCNA or similar. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and conveying technical information. These skills and qualities ensure the engineer can design reliable communication systems, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and contribute to innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving field.

Job description

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY
Fox Corporation
Under the FOX banner, we produce and distribute content through some of the world's leading and most valued brands, including: FOX News Media, FOX Sports, FOX Entertainment, FOX Television Stations and Tubi Media Group. We empower a diverse range of creators to imagine and develop culturally significant content, while building an organization that thrives on creative ideas, operational expertise and strategic thinking.
JOB DESCRIPTION
AdRise, FOX's advertising technology platform, is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to design and own the data infrastructure powering ad delivery, audience analytics, identity resolution, and campaign measurement at scale. You'll work across Databricks, Snowflake, and AWS to build pipelines that are fast, reliable, and built to last - and you'll serve as a technical anchor for the broader data engineering team, raising the bar on architecture, code quality, and operational standards.
This is a high-ownership role for an engineer who wants to solve hard data problems, influence platform-level decisions, and directly shape the systems that drive a large-scale streaming ad business.
A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a senior technical voice on the team - driving architecture decisions, establishing engineering standards, and leading design reviews
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to mid-level and junior engineers; participate in code review and raise overall team craft
  • Identify and drive improvements to existing systems - performance, reliability, cost, and maintainability

Pipeline & Platform Engineering
  • Architect, build, and own complex ETL/ELT pipelines that ingest, transform, and deliver large-scale ad event, identity, and campaign data
  • Design and optimize data models in Databricks (Delta Lake) and Snowflake for performance, cost efficiency, and downstream usability
  • Build and operate real-time and event-driven data flows using Kafka, Kinesis, and AWS-native services (Glue, Lambda, S3, API Gateway)
  • Implement CDC patterns and streaming ingestion to support low-latency analytics and operational data products

Data Quality, Governance & Observability
  • Build and maintain data quality frameworks, validation layers, and alerting pipelines using Datadog and Airflow/Astronomer
  • Champion data governance standards - lineage, cataloging, access controls - within Unity Catalog and across the platform
  • Ensure systems are well-documented, observable, and operationally sound

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with data analysts, analytics engineers, and ML/data science teams to translate requirements into durable data products
  • Collaborate with platform and infrastructure engineers on shared systems, pipeline dependencies, and cost optimization
  • Interface with stakeholders to define data contracts, SLAs, and schema standards

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • Bachelor's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Communication Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related technical field.
  • Alternatively, a master's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Communication Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related technical field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on data engineering experience, with depth in pipeline architecture, data modeling, and large-scale data systems
  • Advanced proficiency in Databricks (Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Workflows) and Snowflake
  • Strong Python skills; Scala a plus
  • Solid experience with AWS data services: Kinesis, S3, Glue, Lambda, API Gateway
  • Experience with real-time / event-driven architectures (Kafka, Kinesis, or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of Airflow or Astronomer for orchestration
  • Familiarity with Datadog or comparable observability tooling for data pipelines
  • Demonstrated ability to own systems end-to-end - from design through production operations
  • Strong communication skills; able to articulate technical tradeoffs to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders

NICE TO HAVE, BUT NOT A DEALBREAKER
  • Experience in digital advertising, connected TV, or streaming media - ad delivery, identity graphs, audience segmentation, or campaign measurement
  • Experience with identity resolution systems (UID2, HEM, or similar)
  • CI/CD for data pipelines and infrastructure-as-code (CDK or Terraform)
  • Familiarity with dbt or analytics engineering patterns
  • Agile/Kanban experience in a data or platform engineering environment

WHY JOIN ADRISE
  • Own meaningful infrastructure in a high-scale, real-time ad tech environment powering FOX's connected TV business
  • Work with a modern, cloud-native stack - Databricks, Delta Lake, Kafka, Kinesis, AWS - with real investment behind it
  • Collaborate with a team that values engineering rigor, documentation, and building systems that last
  • Be part of a platform that sits at the intersection of identity, audience, and programmatic advertising - a genuinely interesting problem space
