Contract Wire Harness Design Engineer information

What does a contract wire harness design engineer do?

A Contract Wire Harness Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing electrical wire harnesses used in vehicles, machinery, or electronic equipment on a contract or project basis. Their work typically involves creating detailed schematics, selecting appropriate materials, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and collaborating with other engineers to integrate harnesses into larger systems. This role often requires expertise in CAD software, understanding of electrical systems, and the ability to troubleshoot design challenges efficiently. Contract engineers may work for multiple clients or on specific projects, providing flexible engineering solutions when companies need specialized expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract wire harness design engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Wire Harness Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, experience with wiring schematics, and familiarity with industry standards such as IPC/WHMA-A-620. Proficiency in CAD tools like AutoCAD Electrical, CATIA, or SolidWorks Electrical, along with knowledge of PLM systems, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and clients. These skills ensure accurate and efficient design, compliance with safety standards, and successful project delivery in a competitive engineering environment.

What are some common challenges that contract wire harness design engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Contract Wire Harness Design Engineers often collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to ensure harness designs meet all requirements and integrate seamlessly into larger systems. A common challenge is aligning design specifications and timelines across different departments, especially when project priorities shift or last-minute changes arise. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial for resolving conflicting requirements and ensuring the final harness design is both manufacturable and compliant with safety standards. Building strong relationships with team members and proactively seeking feedback can help streamline the design process and minimize delays.

What is the difference between Contract Wire Harness Design Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectContract Wire Harness Design EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
CredentialsRelevant engineering certifications, wiring and harness design experienceElectrical engineering degree, certifications may vary
Work EnvironmentContract-based projects, manufacturing or automotive industriesFull-time roles, diverse industries including electronics and power systems
Industry UsageCommonly used in automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipmentUsed across electronics, power systems, and automation sectors

The Contract Wire Harness Design Engineer focuses specifically on designing wiring harnesses for various industries, often on a contractual basis. In contrast, the Electrical Design Engineer has a broader scope, working on overall electrical systems and components. Both roles require electrical knowledge, but the contract engineer specializes in harness design for specific projects, while the electrical engineer may handle system-level design and integration.

Wire Harness Mechanical Design Engineer About the Opportunity

Our client is a rapidly growing energy technology company developing next-generation battery energy storage systems that are preparing for large-scale commercial deployment. As they transition a flagship product from development into high-volume manufacturing, they are seeking an experienced Wire Harness Design Engineer with deep expertise in both mechanical harness design and Zuken E3 to support the next phase of product development.

This is a highly visible role working at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineering, with direct influence on product reliability, manufacturability, and deployment readiness.

Position Overview

The Wire Harness Design Engineer will own the mechanical design, routing, packaging, and integration of complex wire harness systems used within large-scale battery energy storage products. The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on experience with harness architecture, connector integration, mechanical packaging, and Zuken E3 design tools.

This role requires close collaboration with Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain teams to deliver production-ready harness solutions capable of supporting large-scale deployment.

Key Responsibilities Wire Harness Design & Development
  • Design and develop complex wire harness systems using Zuken E3 and SOLIDWORKS.

  • Create detailed harness schematics, harness architecture, and electrical interconnect documentation in Zuken E3.

  • Develop 2D and 3D harness models, installation drawings, and manufacturing documentation.

  • Define harness routing paths, breakout locations, branch points, and connector interfaces.

  • Design mechanical retention solutions including clips, brackets, mounts, strain relief systems, and cable management features.

  • Optimize harness layouts for manufacturability, serviceability, reliability, and cost.

Mechanical Integration & Packaging
  • Route harnesses throughout battery pack assemblies, enclosures, sensors, and supporting subsystems.

  • Perform packaging studies to ensure proper clearances, bend radius compliance, and environmental protection.

  • Evaluate routing paths for vibration, abrasion, thermal exposure, and assembly accessibility.

  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers to resolve packaging conflicts and integration challenges.

  • Support sensor integration and electrical component mounting within complex assemblies.

Connector Selection & Electrical Integration
  • Select connectors, terminals, backshells, cable protection systems, and sealing solutions.

  • Design and integrate IP-rated connector systems for demanding operating environments.

  • Interpret electrical schematics and convert electrical requirements into manufacturable harness designs.

  • Partner with Electrical Engineers to ensure system-level electrical and mechanical compatibility.

  • Support grounding, shielding, and high-reliability electrical interface requirements.

Documentation & Release
  • Generate engineering drawings, wiring documentation, BOMs, and manufacturing packages.

  • Create and maintain Zuken E3 harness documentation and release packages.

  • Support engineering change orders (ECOs) and configuration management processes.

  • Develop assembly instructions and manufacturing documentation for production teams.

  • Ensure documentation accuracy throughout development, validation, and release cycles.
