What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical CAD Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical CAD Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, proficiency in drafting, and typically an associate degree or relevant certification in CAD or electrical design. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software such as AutoCAD Electrical and knowledge of electrical codes and standards are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective teamwork. These skills and qualities are vital for producing precise, compliant designs that support efficient project workflows and minimize costly errors.

What are some of the typical daily responsibilities for an Electrical CAD professional?

As an Electrical CAD professional, your daily tasks will often include creating and modifying detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using CAD software. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers and project managers to interpret design specifications and ensure that all drawings meet industry standards and client requirements. Regular communication with other departments, such as mechanical and architectural teams, is common to coordinate design integration. Additionally, you may be responsible for updating documentation and assisting with revisions throughout the project lifecycle.

What is an Electrical CAD designer?

An Electrical CAD (Computer-Aided Design) designer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts for electrical systems in buildings, machinery, or products. They work closely with engineers and project managers to ensure accurate designs that meet industry standards and project requirements. Electrical CAD designers play a crucial role in translating engineering concepts into precise digital drawings that guide installation and manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Electrical Cad vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical CadElectrical Engineer
CertificationsProficiency in CAD software, such as AutoCAD or RevitProfessional engineering license (PE), degree in electrical engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labs, project sitesDesign, analysis, project management in offices or on-site
Job FocusCreating detailed electrical drawings and schematicsDesigning electrical systems, ensuring code compliance, project planning

Electrical Cad professionals focus on creating detailed electrical drawings using CAD software, while Electrical Engineers are involved in designing electrical systems, analyzing requirements, and overseeing implementation. Both roles often collaborate but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Background check and drug screening are requirements of this position. Contingent on client approval.
• The Senior Electrical CAD Designer will support the development of 2D shipboard electrical power and control schematics, automation diagrams, and associated documentation.
• This role is focused on delivering clear, detailed, and standards-compliant CAD deliverables that support engineering design, vendor interfacing, fabrication, and installation for shipboard systems.
Requirements
CAD Drafting & Documentation
• Produce 2D shipboard power and control schematics (single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts) that reflect engineering intent, vessel architecture, and installation requirements.
• Develop PLC system schematics, including I/O layout, power feeds, reference designators, signal sets, and interface points with power and control systems.
Implement and maintain strict drafting standards and best practices such as:
• Layer management, line types, fonts, and text styles
• Drawing organization, annotation clarity, and scale consistency
• Use of viewports, title blocks, and reference callouts for fabrication and installation readiness
• Generate and revise CAD drawings based on engineering review comments, change requests, and vendor data.
Standards Compliance & Quality
• Organize and maintain clean, consistent CAD deliverables that support electrical design and installation across shipboard zones.
• Ensure drawings are suitable for fabrication and installation teams with accurate detail, notes, and dimensions.
• Adhere to internal company CAD standards and electrical drafting conventions tailored for marine power and control systems.
Coordination & Support
• Work closely with electrical engineers and automation engineers to interpret design requirements, schematics, and specification inputs.
• Support design reviews by preparing updated CAD deliverables and incorporating feedback from multidisciplinary teams.
• Communicate technical questions and suggestions clearly to engineering staff to resolve drawing ambiguities.
Physical Job Requirements
1. Perform onboard field verification and redline walkdowns of drawings and installations
2. Climb ladders and access multiple levels of the vessel for layout validation
3. Enter confined or congested areas (cableways, piping routes, structural zones)
4. Stand and walk for moderate durations during surveys and coordination efforts
5. Carry laptops, drawing sets, or tablets (10-15 lbs) onboard
6. Work in low-light, high-noise, or restricted-access areas as required
7. Wear required PPE and safely navigate active shipyard and vessel environments
Education/Certification Requirements:
• Demonstrated experience producing shipboard electrical power and control schematics and related technical drawings.
• Strong proficiency in 2D CAD software, such as AutoCAD or equivalent, with a track record of producing high-quality electrical schematic and detail drawings.
• Solid understanding of drafting standards and practices, including effective layer management, line types, plotting, use of viewports, and drawing to scale.
• Ability to produce clear, consistent, and well-organized electrical drawings that support construction and installation activities.
Preferred
• Hands-on experience or familiarity with PLCs and associated hardware, including schematic development for inputs, outputs, power, and control interfaces.
• Background working in marine or industrial environments with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Familiarity with electrical schematic conventions used for power distribution, control logic, and automation documentation.
