What are Utilities Drafters?

Utilities Drafters are professionals who use specialized software to create technical drawings and plans for the installation, maintenance, and repair of utility systems, such as water, gas, electricity, and telecommunications. They transform engineering designs and specifications into detailed blueprints, layouts, and diagrams that guide construction and infrastructure projects. Utilities Drafters play a key role in ensuring that utility systems are designed accurately and comply with industry standards and regulations. Their work supports engineers, architects, and utility companies in delivering safe and efficient public services.

Are drafters still in demand?

Utilities drafters are still in demand due to ongoing infrastructure projects and the need for accurate technical drawings. Employment opportunities often require proficiency in CAD software and knowledge of utility systems, with job stability supported by infrastructure maintenance and development efforts.

What is the highest paying drafting job?

Senior utilities drafters or specialized engineering drafters tend to have the highest salaries within drafting roles, especially those with advanced skills in CAD software and utility design. Positions in energy, infrastructure, or consulting firms often offer higher pay, and obtaining certifications can also increase earning potential.

Will CAD drafters be replaced by AI?

CAD drafters in the utilities industry perform detailed technical drawings and design work that require expertise and judgment. While AI and automation tools can assist with repetitive tasks and data processing, they are unlikely to fully replace skilled drafters in complex design and decision-making roles in the near future.

How does a Utilities Drafter typically collaborate with engineers and field teams during a project?

Utilities Drafters work closely with engineers to translate design concepts and specifications into detailed technical drawings for utility systems such as water, gas, or electricity. They often participate in project meetings to discuss design changes and address any issues that arise, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Additionally, Utilities Drafters communicate regularly with field teams to clarify plans, incorporate site-specific information, and make necessary adjustments based on real-world conditions. This collaborative approach helps ensure projects progress smoothly from initial design to implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Utilities Drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Utilities Drafter, you need strong technical drawing skills, knowledge of utility systems, and typically an associate degree or relevant certification in drafting or engineering technology. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or MicroStation) and GIS systems is essential for creating and modifying utility maps and plans. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help ensure accurate designs and smooth collaboration with engineers and field crews. These skills are crucial for producing precise utility layouts that support safe, efficient infrastructure development and maintenance.

Utility Drafter/Designer

Location: Huntington, WV Metro Area (Hybrid Eligible)

Power communities. Design the grid. Build your career.

We’re seeking a Utility Drafter/Designer to join our growing utility engineering team. In this role, you’ll design and support electric utility infrastructure that keeps communities powered—working on distribution, transmission, and substation projects from concept through construction. If you enjoy technical problem‑solving, collaborating across disciplines, and seeing your designs come to life in the field, this role offers meaningful work with flexibility and long‑term growth.

What You’ll Do

As a Distribution Designer, you’ll play a key role in delivering safe, reliable, and cost‑effective electrical infrastructure.

  • Create high‑quality manual and computer‑assisted design and construction drawings with a strong focus on accuracy and constructability
  • Apply industry standards, company design practices, and engineering specifications to complex utility design work
  • Support the preparation of cost estimates, specifications, material requisitions, and technical documentation
  • Assist with engineering calculations and technical evaluations that inform sound design decisions
  • Coordinate design activities and equipment deliveries to support project schedules and milestones
  • Collect and interpret on‑site field data, including measurements and existing conditions
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, field crews, and other stakeholders to resolve design issues
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and quality standards
  • Take ownership of assigned work while demonstrating leadership and accountability appropriate to your level

What You Bring

You bring a strong technical foundation, curiosity, and confidence working independently while staying connected to a team.

  • Proficiency with CAD/CADD tools and experience producing construction drawings
  • Experience working from drawings, specifications, and engineering standards
  • Familiarity with GIS and mapping tools related to utility or infrastructure projects
  • Ability to gather and apply field data to support accurate designs
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time‑management skills
  • Comfort managing multiple tasks with minimal supervision

Qualifications (Flexible by Level)

We’ll consider candidates for the appropriate designer level based on experience and demonstrated capability.

Distribution Designer – Associate

  • 2+ years of relevant experience or
  • Associate degree (or equivalent) in a technical field preferred

Distribution Designer II

  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • At least 1 year of successful experience as a Designer I / Associate Designer
  • Associate degree (or equivalent) in a technical field preferred

Relevant experience may include drafting, field engineering, GIS, distribution or transmission design, substation design, civil or mechanical design, surveying, protective relaying, or instrumentation and controls.

Work Environment & Flexibility
  • Primarily office‑based using modern engineering design tools (CAD/CADD, GIS)
  • Flexible work hours available after training, based on business needs
  • Hybrid work option: up to 2 days per week remote after training, depending on performance
  • Occasional field site visits to support design accuracy and construction readiness
  • Professional, collaborative environment that values safety, quality, and teamwork

Why This Role
  • Work on critical infrastructure projects that directly impact communities
  • Gain exposure across multiple utility disciplines
  • Clear opportunity for career progression and skill development
