Electrical Bim Coordinator information

What is an Electrical BIM Coordinator?

Electrical BIM Coordinators are professionals who manage and coordinate the digital modeling of electrical systems within building projects using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. They work closely with engineers, architects, and contractors to ensure that all electrical components are accurately represented and integrated in the BIM models. Their responsibilities include clash detection, maintaining model accuracy, and ensuring that electrical designs meet project specifications and standards. This role is crucial for streamlining construction processes, minimizing errors, and improving collaboration across project teams.

How does an Electrical BIM Coordinator typically collaborate with other disciplines during a project?

An Electrical BIM Coordinator works closely with architects, structural engineers, and mechanical teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems within the overall building information model. Collaboration usually involves regular coordination meetings, clash detection sessions, and sharing model updates to resolve potential conflicts early. Effective communication and a strong understanding of multidisciplinary standards are essential for aligning electrical layouts with the broader project goals. This collaborative approach helps prevent costly rework and ensures that all systems function harmoniously within the final design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical BIM Coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical BIM Coordinator, you need strong knowledge of electrical systems, building codes, and BIM processes, usually backed by a degree in electrical engineering or related field and relevant industry experience. Proficiency in BIM software such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks, as well as familiarity with clash detection and coordination tools, is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, collaboration, and communication skills help facilitate coordination across multidisciplinary teams. These abilities ensure accurate project documentation, minimize design conflicts, and support efficient project delivery in complex construction environments.

What is the difference between Electrical Bim Coordinator vs Electrical Designer?

AspectElectrical Bim CoordinatorElectrical Designer
CertificationsRevit, BIM certifications, electrical engineering credentialsElectrical engineering licenses, CAD certifications
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, design offices, BIM modeling teamsDesign offices, project planning, drafting environments
Industry UsageBuilding design, construction projects, BIM coordinationElectrical system design, schematic development

The Electrical Bim Coordinator primarily manages BIM models, ensuring coordination among disciplines, while the Electrical Designer focuses on creating electrical system designs and schematics. Both roles require electrical credentials and work closely within construction and design environments, but their core responsibilities differ in project execution and focus areas.

Job description

GeoSearch is actively seeking an Electrical BIM Coordinator in Reno, NV. This is a full-time, on-site position. The BIM Coordinator will support electrical project teams by managing building information models, coordinating clash detection efforts, and facilitating clear communication between electrical, engineering, and construction stakeholders. Day-to-day responsibilities include setting up and maintaining electrical BIM models, integrating models across trades for coordination purposes, reviewing design changes, and supporting the development and execution of BIM standards and workflows. The role also involves preparing coordination meeting content, documenting issues and resolutions, and working closely with project managers to ensure model data supports procurement, prefabrication, and field installation. The BIM Coordinator will uphold data integrity, auditable documentation, and clear accountability across the project lifecycle.

Qualifications:

  • Strong BIM expertise with a focus on electrical systems, including model coordination, management, and integration in a multitrade environment
  • Experience coordinating electrical systems — conduit, cable tray, power distribution, and equipment — in a BIM environment, including clash detection and constructability review.
  • Familiarity with other trade disciplines (mechanical, plumbing, structural) sufficient to participate in and support multitrade coordination efforts
  • Project management capabilities, including stakeholder coordination, issue tracking, schedule awareness, and thorough documentation of decisions and changes
  • Proficiency with common BIM and coordination platforms, including Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360, or similar tools; experience with reality capture or point clouds is a plus
  • Experience on data center or other large-scale, high-density electrical projects preferred
  • Ability to work on-site, collaborating with multiple project teams and translating model data into actionable information for construction, procurement, and prefabrication
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a commitment to accuracy, accountability, and continuous process improvement
  • Relevant technical or professional education in electrical, engineering, or construction
