Assessing needs and producing fit-for-purpose documents in a specialized sub-field in high demand. Identifying, evaluating and using domain-specific resources for knowledge acquisition and text production, with and without computer tools. Adapting texts for key groups in the domain. This course may be taken twice in different subject fields.

Qualifications:

  • Professional-level language skills in English (active) and French (passive).
  • Master's degree in Translation or Translation Studies, membership in a recognized association or order of professional translators in the French to English language combination, and/or equivalent academic and professional experience.
  • Extensive professional experience as a French to English translator, preferably in Canada.
  • Strong conceptual and terminological knowledge and translation experience in administration, preferably in public sector contexts.
  • Professional experience in administrative translation from French to English, preferably in Canada(e.g., in federal or provincial government contexts).Good knowledge of public sector (e.g., Canadian federal and/or provincial government)standards in writing and translation.University-level teaching experience is an asset

Duties:

  • Deliver lectures and manage classroom activities and assessments mainly in English, occasionally in French
  • Build and maintain a site for the course in the university's learning management system.
  • Select source texts appropriate to the levels of students and course learning outcomes.
  • Integrate relevant conceptual and terminological content and subject field conventions with instruction on translation.
  • Provide detailed feedback and suggestions in translation-oriented exercises and assessments to help students develop translation and critical thinking skills.
  • Integrate discussions of and/or exercises with appropriate technological tools in the course content, with reference to selected technologies and resources provided by the School.
  • Coordinate with the Chair/Program Coordinator and colleagues to maintain program learning outcomes and coherence, while maintaining academic freedom.
