Job description

Position Summary:
The EKG Technician (EKGT) is responsible for performing Electrocardiogram (EKG's) on patients using protocol specific to hookup. May perform a variety of patient care tasks to patients under the direction of the cardiopulmonary staff.
Qualifications:
Education:
  • High school diploma required.
  • Associate degree in health science or closely related field preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in an acute care setting required or may substitute for Certified EKG Technician.
  • Previous experience performing EKG testing preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration
  • Certified as an EKG Technician preferred.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Greet all patients and their accompanying family members when applicable and provide exemplary customer service.
  • participate in a variety of specialized technical activities to include performing and analyzing digitized EKG results generating quantitative arrhythmia reports.
  • Participate in a variety of patient care activities to include monitor application, patient instruction, and analyze digitized information from pre-recorded Ambulatory Holter monitored using specialized software.
  • Apply and remove holter monitors to both in-patients and out-patients; explain procedures including, but not limited to, equipment usage, the patient's responsibility for keeping a diary/record and the use of event monitors and data transmittal as needed.
  • Edit information and generate quantitative arrhythmia reports for physician review.
  • Conduct stress exercise testing, assist with stress echoes and nuclear stress studies.
  • Perform phlebotomy as needed to assist the outpatient lab in the PAT area as it pertains to surgical patients.
  • Clean equipment and perform preventative maintenance after each use; to include troubleshooting, reviewing leads, and isolating technical problems with recorders.
  • Schedule patient procedures and maintain logging and schedule system as needed.
  • Participate in research quality projects involving testing provided as requested.
  • The EKGT will set up patient rooms and maintain a stock area for procedures including linens, electrodes, and order supplies as necessary.
  • Assist in maintaining database to archive diagnostic tapes; perform routine backup to computer network as required.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with imaging colleagues, physicians, and department heads.
  • Effectively utilize strong organizational skills.
  • Consistently display effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient understanding and use of technology/PC skills required.
  • Regularly exercise independent judgment.
