Job Title: Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist | Contract Role

Job Description

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist develops, promotes, and maintains an effective EHS program, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations while supporting a manufacturing environment. This role manages hazardous and solid waste programs, provides technical expertise, and partners with internal teams and external contractors to drive safe, compliant, and efficient operations.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate and promote the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) program on an ongoing basis across the organization.
  • Characterize, profile, and coordinate the disposal of solid and hazardous wastes in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that the storage, handling, and removal of all wastes comply with applicable local, state, and federal regulations in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Prepare, file, and maintain a variety of environmental reports required by permits and regulatory agencies, including monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual, biennial, and event-triggered reports.
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of applicable environmental and safety regulations and statutes, and apply this knowledge to daily operations.
  • Actively participate in internal initiatives as a team member or in a leadership role to improve EHS performance and compliance.
  • Formulate compliance strategies, define practical solutions, develop actionable plans, and organize technical information to support EHS objectives.
  • Provide technical expertise in areas such as engineering, chemistry, and toxicology to support both internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Track and interpret local, state, and federal regulations, including CERCLA, SARA, CAA, RCRA, and CWA, and translate requirements into operational practices.
  • Participate in facility inspections and follow up on findings to assure ongoing compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with environmental contractors to plan, coordinate, and oversee appropriate tasks related to environmental and waste management programs.
  • Apply strong problem-solving skills to address practical EHS challenges and adapt to a variety of changing situations.
  • Use effective time management and prioritization to meet multiple reporting deadlines and operational commitments.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment, or strong ability to adapt EHS practices to manufacturing operations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience with safety programs and EHS management in an operational setting.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with hazardous waste management, including storage, handling, and disposal.
  • Familiarity with OSHA requirements and safety standards, including OSHA 30 and/or OSHA 40 training.
  • Ability to conduct EHS inspections and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Strong understanding of environmental health and safety principles, including safety, EHS, OSHA, health and safety, and environmental health.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements related to CERCLA, SARA, CAA, RCRA, and CWA.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of changing situations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong technical and professional knowledge and skills, including the ability to analyze EHS data and information.
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred and considered a strong asset.
  • Advanced understanding of safety program development and implementation.
  • Experience working with environmental contractors and external service providers.
  • Ability to organize and communicate complex technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in or lead internal initiatives focused on EHS improvement.
  • Strong analytical skills for technical and professional knowledge and skills analysis.
  • Relevant certifications or training in EHS, environmental management, or occupational safety beyond the core degree are beneficial.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role based in Berkeley Heights, with standard working hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position supports a manufacturing environment, which may involve regular presence on the production floor and in facility areas where environmental and safety programs are implemented. The role requires close collaboration with operations staff, technical teams, and environmental contractors, as well as regular facility inspections and interactions with equipment and processes related to waste management and environmental compliance.

This is a Contract position based out of Berkeley Heights, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $57.69 - $62.50/hr.
