Senior Data Engineer – Healthcare Data & Business Intelligence

Position: Senior Data Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join a growing healthcare organization and play a critical role in developing, optimizing, and maintaining the data infrastructure that supports organizational operations and strategic decision-making.

This position is ideal for a senior-level data professional who combines strong SQL, database, ETL/data pipeline, data warehousing, and Business Intelligence expertise with hands-on experience supporting EHR and Practice Management (PM) systems within a healthcare environment.

The Senior Data Engineer will design and maintain data pipelines, analytical data models, and BI reporting solutions while partnering with technical and operational teams to turn complex business requirements into reliable, actionable data. A key component of the position will also include claims scrubbing, EDI, and data optimization to improve claims accuracy, processing efficiency, and reimbursement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines, data flows, and datasets across multiple databases and systems.
  • Extract, transform, and load (ETL) data into clean, standardized formats aligned with business requirements.
  • Design and implement analytical data models and data structures used by BI analysts for reporting and analysis.
  • Design, build, deploy, and maintain Business Intelligence reports and reporting solutions.
  • Work extensively with Microsoft SQL Server, relational databases, and data warehouses.
  • Assume database administration (DBA) responsibilities as needed and partner with system administrators to maintain databases and database servers.
  • Monitor data systems, troubleshoot issues, and ensure the accuracy, integrity, security, and reliability of organizational data.
  • Partner with EHR application users and cross-functional stakeholders to identify reporting requirements and develop effective technical solutions.
  • Analyze data for anomalies, accuracy, trends, and applicability to business requests.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of business processes and translate operational needs into effective data solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, processes, and organizational strategies through technology and automation.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects from requirements gathering through design, development, QA/UAT, implementation, and release.
  • Support change-control processes and follow established quality assurance and documentation standards.
  • Assist with the training, mentoring, and professional development of other team members.
Claims Scrubbing & Data Optimization

A key focus of this role will be supporting the organization's revenue cycle and claims processes through accurate, optimized data.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement claims-scrubbing processes to improve accuracy and compliance with payer requirements.
  • Monitor and analyze claims data to identify errors, trends, recurring issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with billing and coding teams to improve data quality and streamline claims workflows.
  • Apply knowledge of claims processing and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to improve data flow and reimbursement processes.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce claim errors and improve overall revenue cycle efficiency.
Required Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field preferred. Relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience developing datasets.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience working through requirements, design, development, QA/UAT testing, implementation, and delivery within release cycles.
  • Strong experience with:
    • Microsoft SQL Server
    • SQL and relational databases
    • ETL/data pipelines
    • Data warehouses
    • Business Intelligence and reporting
    • Analytical data modeling
    • Database management and optimization
  • Experience implementing an EHR system or another large-scale enterprise system is required.
  • Professional IT experience working with EHR and Practice Management systems within a medical, healthcare, hospital, or behavioral health organization.
  • Knowledge of healthcare claims processing and EDI.
  • Experience with NextGen EHR and NextGen Practice Management is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience gathering requirements and translating business needs into technical solutions.
  • Experience successfully planning and leading strategic initiatives within established timelines and budgets.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
