TITLE: Sign Language InterpreterLOCATION: Tiffin Elementary (Tiffin, IA)HOURS: 7:30-11:00 AM, 10 monthsJOB SUMMARY: Assist teachers in providing access to communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing to maximize the educational opportunities available within the school community. This position involves interpreting classroom instruction and facilitating communication between students and teachers within the classroom and other school-based settings.QUALIFICATIONS:Must be Licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health through the Iowa Board of Sign Language Interpreters and Transliterators.Previous experience working with children is preferred but not requiredPost-secondary coursework in educational field is preferred but not requiredInitiative to be a self-starterIntuitive to the needs of the studentAbility to work collaboratively with the classroom teacher, support staff, administrators, AEA, and parents of the student, as part of the student's educational teamAbility to use good judgment when unexpected problems ariseAbility to use basic office equipmentMay be assigned other related duties in addition to those listed aboveSPECIFIC DUTIES:Any or all of the following duties may apply to a specific associate position, depending on the needs of the student and the operation of the educational setting.Attend work on a prompt and regular basisMaintain confidentialityMaintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employeesFacilitate all communication in a variety of environments and Foster and encourage student independenceProvide accurate and effective sign language interpretation for classroom instruction, social interactions with students and teachers, and school activities. Plan with teacher to prepare for interpreting.Assist in the implementation and monitoring of students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs)Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipmentParticipate in IEP meetings to provide team critical information about appropriate supportive communication strategies throughout the student's school dayAssist in accurate documentation related to student communicationPerform other activities as required by building principal or teachersReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.
