Job Summary:
The Associate Director will ensure that stakeholders understand and support the coordination and expectations unique to the Physician Scientist training and career pathway and facilitate students' progress to successful academic research careers. The Associate Director will have a leadership role on our MSTP T32 award, the MSTP Executive Committee, and various School of Medicine and Graduate School Committees as assigned. The Associate Director will understand and help revise key policies and processes of MD stakeholders when appropriate and work closely with the MSTP Director to integrate the curriculum across the long training program. Participation in the annual MSTP Conference, MSTP Retreat, MSTP Student Council meetings, MSTP social activities, and individual student advising and counseling is also required. The Associate Director runs the MSTP Foundations of Doctoring preceptorship course, the Capstone Clinical Re-Entry course, and the Trailhead/Electives Return-to-Clinics courses. The Clinical Associate Program Director works closely with the Associate Program Director for Thesis Studies and the various MD Trek phase teams to facilitate integrated training and transition between the phases and to support the vision and plans of the Program Director working closely with the MSTP administrative team.
All MSTP leadership serve as key advisors to MSTP students, coaching and facilitating excellence in MSTP student achievement in both clinical and research work. They serve a prominent role as an individual advisor particularly in the last years of MSTP education, meeting with students regularly in both 1:1 and group settings to ensure that students move through the program and match successfully into top research-oriented residency training programs.

This position reports directly to the MSTP Program Director within ORE and has a dotted reporting line structure to the Vice Executive Dean of Medical Education.

Key Responsibilities:
25% - MSTP Leadership and Administration:
Attends the MSTP Executive Committee Meetings, at least bi-monthly, and serves as a voting member for matters of program policy
o Brings relevant topics related to MSTP medical education to this committee for discussion and policy development, as appropriate
Attends MSTP Leadership meetings, at least bi-monthly (usually the months between Executive Committee Meetings)
o Helps to draft policy proposals and updates in these discussions for presentation at Executive Committee Meetings
o Brings updates on student progress and students of concern for medical-phase students
Meets with the MSTP Program Director 1:1 monthly to review current progress on key initiatives and projects
Serves as the MSTP representative to the School of Medicine Curriculum Steering Committee, reporting out on program outcomes and lending MSTP perspective to curriculum policies as applicable.
o Captures relevant items for reporting/discussion at MSTP Executive Committee Meeting and Leadership Meetings
Displays a deep knowledge and understanding of MSTP medical-phase policies as outlined in the MST Program Handbook
o Serves as a primary source for questions and concerns related to these policies from students, faculty, and staff
o Develops and revises plans for medical phase training and transitions for MSTP handbook.
Participates in Admissions and Recruitment functions
o Serves as an admissions committee 1:1 interviewer for six interview afternoons annually (at least 3 hours per interview day)
o Attends MSTP recruitment activities during the MSTP Second Look, typically an all-day event occurring on a Friday in March
Attends key MSTP Events Annually as a representative of MSTP Leadership
o These include a leadership retreat, the MSTP Annual Program Retreat, and Graduation Dinner, and other MSTP social events.
Contribute to grant applications (e.g., T32, R13) and renewals as needed, contributing and reviewing content and providing materials for courses specific to the MD curriculum and integrated training.
May attend MSTP-related conferences and meetings on behalf of the program annually (MD/PhD Conference, SACNAS, ABRCAMS) and local presentations/recruitment events.
25% - Academic Advising and Progress Support:
Serves on thesis committees for MSTP students where experience and expertise applies, at student request.
o MSTP Thesis Committees meet twice per year, each meeting lasting two hours
o Additional advisory sessions may be needed as required for each student's progression
Prepare and submit MSTP letters of recommendation for student F30/F31 training grant applications, as assigned, together with the rest of the leadership team.
In close collaboration with the MSTP Program Director and Administration, oversees the transition of MSTP students for their transition from Trek to graduate school and from completion of thesis studies to clinical MD training during the flexible re-entry period.
o Meets with each student ahead of their transitions, once in the Fall term of the academic year prior to their planned return to MD as a class (group meeting) and once 1:1 during the Spring term of the academic year prior to their planned return to MD. This schedule may be changed as we transition from legacy to Trek students.
o Ensures that all transitioning students have a complete and approved academic plan/schedule for their flexible re-entry that addresses their unique personal goals for residency and the remainder of their clinical education
Monitors academic progress during clinical education in the MD program.
Leads advisory sessions with MSTP classes ahead of key programmatic milestones including planning a return to thesis, selection of phase III/IV electives, and preparing for residency applications.
o Advisory meetings occasionally require evening meetings to accommodate trainee's clinical schedule
o May participate in other group advisory sessions as appropriate
Participates in meetings with students ahead of their residency application cycle and ensures that they have adequate support for physician scientist training programs (PSTP) and research-intensive residencies.
o Writes MSTP supplemental letters for student's ERAS MSPE in collaboration with the Program Director and School of Medicine leadership.
Participates in MSTP Seminars, pre-thesis advising, and Molecules-to-Medicine course as appropriate.
25% - Course Direction:
Serves as course director for the following clinically oriented MSTP Graduate Courses:
o MSTP7655 - MSTP Foundations of Doctoring (two semesters per year; all thesis students).
o MSTP7755 - MSTP Clinical Capstone (one-week inpatient medicine course in final semester of thesis years).
o MSTP8033 - MSTP Trailhead and Return-to-Clinics Electives (designs flexible re-entry program of inpatient medicine or surgery and appropriately selected electives in collaboration with clinical partners and SOM Alpine phase team).
Oversees scheduling and grading/feedback for all courses and facilitates recruitment of faculty as required.
Reviews and revises course syllabi annually with an emphasis on course requirements, expected outcomes, and grading rubric.
Partners with MSTP Administration to track student performance and completion of MSTP clinical requirements/courses and transmits final grades to the registrar's office.
25% - Program Representation:
Serves as the primary program liaison to the School of Medicine and Medical School program leadership.
o Advocates for physician-scientist education and training with MD curriculum deans and program administrators.
Oversees recruitment of new MSTP Foundations of Doctoring preceptors and identifies potential new MSTP faculty.
Understands core Medical School policies and recognizes how these policies interact with MSTP policies and procedures. Advises medical-phase students on these policies as required.
Attends monthly MD Curriculum Steering Committee Meeting as an MSTP representative
