Job description

Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced Remote-Centered environment with variety in your work? The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic Senior Insurane Examiner (Supervisor) to join the Field Examination Bureau.

Under general direction of the Supervising Insurance Examiner, the Senior Insurance Examiner (Supervisor) supervises, plans, and directs the work of a staff of insurance examiners in conducting examinations of insurance companies to determine their financial status, solvency and the legality and propriety of their operations; plans, directs and conducts the examinations of the largest and most complex insurance companies; trains field examiners in performing examinations and Electronic Data Processing (EDP) audit tasks; and performs required administrative tasks.
This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code. The position is responsible for making or participating in governmental decisions that may potentially have a material effect on personal financial interests. The appointee is required to complete a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700) within 30 days of appointment, annual filings, and a Leaving Office filing within 30 days of physical separation. Non-compliance with the Conflict of Interest Code requirements may result in voiding of the appointment, financial penalties, or enforcement actions.
Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025 and related Pay Differential 386. PLP 2025 requires employees to receive a reduction in pay in exchange for monthly hours of PLP 2025 leave credits. Working Conditions
  • The incumbent must be able to work in a high-rise building.
  • Lifting and carrying 15-25 pounds, including laptop, printer, and/or work paper boxes.
  • Eligible for telework in accordance with CDI's telework policy. Teleworking employees may be required to report to their headquarters office location on designated telework days. Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.
  • Some travel is required within and/or outside the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include overnight stay.

  • Designation as a Certified Financial Examiner with the Society of Financial Examiners.
  • Experience in conducting financial examinations of medium to large-sized insurance companies.

  • Ability to research and consistently apply California Insurance Code, California Code of Regulations, and statutory accounting practices prescribed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
  • Ability to think critically and make decisions based on reasonable and timely analysis.
  • Ability to monitor financial examinations to ensure examination objectives are met, and work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to review examination work papers, account write-ups, and examination reports to ensure they are completed in accordance with the Field Examination Division's policies and procedures, and the NAIC's Financial Condition Exami ners' Handbook.
  • Ability to train and supervise insurance examiners in the performance of their duties.
  • Willingness to travel and work away from the headquarters office, which includes in-state and out-of-state travel.
