What you will do
Role Overview:
The Battery Energy Storage, Lead Engineer is responsible for supporting energy storage project development, contracting, and construction phases for EDPR utility-scale renewable (PV/wind) + storage and stand-alone storage projects. The person in this role will support the technical analysis of projects during the prospecting and due diligence phases of the development cycle and will be responsible for the engineering design of the storage plants, including pre-design, basic design, tendering documentation and detailed design to guarantee the cost optimization, compliance with deadlines and quality requirements of the projected assets.
Main responsibilities:
  • Determine optimal energy storage system sizing based on technology, costs, application, contract structure, and other applicable constraints in coordination with the renewable asset design. Perform energy storage degradation and augmentation modeling for multiple technologies in coordination and iteration with various use cases based on OEM guidelines.
  • Conceptually design utility-scale energy storage systems and renewable assets + storage that maximized value for the lifetime cost of the system in coordination with the Energy Storage Analytics Department and other Technology Units.
  • Draft preliminary SLD and Layouts based on OEM Specs & Local requirements.
  • Provide the energy storage plant detailed inputs to CapEx Estimation, OPEX, Energy Assessment, and IM&A models
  • Ability to manage the relationship & early design work with external counterparties & selection of external engineering companies.
  • Knowledge with Fire Safety Codes, Permitting & Fire Detection measures for Battery Storage Projects.
  • Perform energy storage degradation and augmentation modeling for multiple technologies in coordination and iteration with various use cases based on OEM guidelines.
  • Coordinate the preparation of technical packages of the Balance of System (BOS) of BESS, , DC, AC low voltage, MV electrical designs, and communications and control system design, for the energy storage plants, ensuring compliance with the conditions established by the business units, other technical departments or external agents & offtake agreements
  • Review and evaluation of the EPC bidder's proposals pertaining to energy storage during the course of EPC selection.
  • Support the Procurement process during negotiation of the technical terms and exhibits of the BESS Contracts, for Capital Equipment and Balance of System, in coordination with other teams.
  • Support the Standardization Department in the preparation of the technical specifications for BESS.
  • Perform & Assist other Technology Units with technical vendor reviews and qualifications.
  • Support the Construction & PMO teams during the execution phase of the projects. Assist in the evaluation and resolution of any proposed modifications of the final engineering project raised during the construction phase, in line with the technical standards of the project.
  • Review the Detailed Design performed by the EPC contractor during the Construction phase, ensuring compliance with the design criteria, technical specifications, and other technical exhibits included in the Contract.
  • Support & Collaborate with project teams throughout development, execution, Factory Acceptance Test of the Capital Equipment, commissioning, and final testing.
  • Coordinate and manage the interface between IEs, OEMs, EPCs, and other key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with other functions in commercial & financial decision making.
  • Communicate information continuously and effectively to cross-functional teams.
  • Perform due diligence & manage the interface with OEM, EMS provider or BESS integrator to make sure Company specification & other contractual obligations. BESS SCADA knowledge will be highly rated.
  • Additional duties as required.

What are we looking for
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Data Science, Math, Physics, Chemistry, or similar from an accredited educational institution
  • 5+ years of technical/engineering experience in the energy industry
  • Experience with design optimizations, value engineering, cost-benefit analysis, or similar
  • Understanding of Microsoft products and/or complementing products preferred.
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise preferred
  • Familiarity with communication protocols & Electrical Engineering Software
  • Knowledge of battery energy storage and solar PV technology
  • Basic knowledge of energy storage value proposition in the wholesale energy markets and to Off-takers
  • Experience in energy storage designs required (specifically battery-based)
  • Knowledge of IEC 62933, NFPA 855, UL 9540, and other relevant standards
  • Auto-Cad experience
  • Existing familiarity with energy storage equipment vendors for the implementation of BESS projects
