What is an ediscovery manager?

Ediscovery Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the process of identifying, collecting, preserving, and producing electronically stored information (ESI) for legal cases and investigations. They manage the technical and legal aspects of electronic discovery, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Ediscovery Managers coordinate between legal teams, IT staff, and external vendors to streamline workflows and reduce risks related to electronic evidence. Their expertise is crucial in complex litigation, regulatory matters, and internal investigations where digital data is central.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ediscovery manager?

To thrive as an Ediscovery Manager, you need expertise in legal procedures, electronic data management, and a solid understanding of the eDiscovery Reference Model, often supported by a degree in law, information management, or a related field. Familiarity with eDiscovery platforms such as Relativity, Clearwell, or Nuix, as well as certifications like CEDS (Certified E-Discovery Specialist), is typically required. Strong project management, analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for coordinating teams and managing complex data workflows. These skills ensure efficient, compliant, and defensible handling of electronic evidence in legal proceedings.

What are some common challenges faced by ediscovery managers when handling large-scale litigation cases?

Ediscovery Managers often encounter challenges such as managing tight deadlines, coordinating with multiple stakeholders (including legal teams, IT, and vendors), and ensuring data security and compliance throughout the electronic discovery process. Large-scale cases may involve reviewing massive volumes of electronically stored information (ESI), which requires efficient workflows and robust technology solutions. Staying organized, adapting to evolving legal standards, and maintaining clear communication with all parties are essential to successfully navigating these complexities.

At Starbucks, our mission is to inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. As a Senior Engineer - Microsoft 365 Messaging & Collaboration, you will design, secure, automate, and support Starbucks' global Microsoft 365 messaging and collaboration platforms, with primary focus on Exchange, Exchange Online, hybrid mail flow, and Microsoft Purview. As a senior engineer, you will:
  • Engineer, administer, and support global Exchange, Exchange Online, and hybrid messaging environments, including mail flow, transport, authentication, directory synchronization, and service reliability.
  • Administer Microsoft 365 messaging and collaboration services, including Exchange Online, Entra ID integrations, and Purview.
  • Partner with Security, Legal, Privacy, Risk, Compliance, Architecture, and Infrastructure teams to implement Microsoft Purview governance, retention, eDiscovery, and information protection solutions.
  • Support tenant governance, lifecycle management, service modernization, migrations, and strategic initiatives such as Microsoft Copilot.
  • Build automation using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph API, Azure Automation, and related technologies to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and reporting.

We'd love to hear from people with...
  • 7+ years of experience in systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, or enterprise messaging administration.
  • 5+ years of experience supporting Microsoft Exchange Server, Exchange Online, and Microsoft 365 in large enterprise environments.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and supporting Exchange Hybrid configurations.
  • Strong knowledge of mail routing, SMTP, hybrid mail flow, authentication, certificate management, and highly available messaging systems.
  • Advanced PowerShell scripting experience for automation, administration, and reporting.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and prioritization skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview compliance, information protection, retention, records management, eDiscovery, legal hold, and sensitivity labels.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access, Identity Governance, Microsoft Graph API, and Azure Automation.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365, cross-tenant migrations, or large-scale mailbox migrations.
  • Experience with enterprise messaging security solutions such as F5 BIG-IP, Cisco IronPort, or equivalent platforms.
  • Microsoft certifications related to Microsoft 365, Exchange, Security, or Compliance.
