What is an Eco Church?

An Eco Church is a community or congregation that integrates environmental care and sustainability into its worship, teaching, buildings, land, community engagement, and lifestyle. The goal is to respond to the environmental crisis by making positive changes that reflect Christian values of stewardship for God’s creation. Many Eco Churches participate in schemes, like the one run by A Rocha UK, which provides resources, guidance, and a recognition system to help churches become greener. These efforts can include energy conservation, promoting biodiversity, reducing waste, and supporting fair trade. Becoming an Eco Church helps faith communities demonstrate leadership in caring for the environment.

How does an Eco Church Coordinator collaborate with congregations and community partners to implement sustainability initiatives?

An Eco Church Coordinator often works closely with church leadership, volunteers, and local organizations to promote and embed sustainable practices within church activities. This may involve organizing educational workshops, facilitating green audits, and supporting the creation of eco-friendly policies. Coordinators frequently act as a bridge between the congregation and external environmental partners, helping to plan events such as community clean-ups or energy-saving campaigns. Regular communication, team meetings, and project management are key aspects of the role, requiring strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Eco Church Coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Eco Church Coordinator, you need knowledge of environmental sustainability, project management skills, and often a background in theology or community work. Familiarity with sustainability assessment tools such as the Eco Church survey, as well as proficiency in organizing workshops and using communication platforms, is valuable. Strong leadership, collaboration, and advocacy skills are essential for inspiring and mobilizing congregations toward eco-friendly practices. These abilities are crucial for successfully integrating environmental stewardship into faith communities and driving impactful change.
