Construction Crew/Millwright


Reports To: Construction Foreman

Hours Per Week: Minimum of 40

Employment Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly


  1. General Summary of the Position

Perform tasks involving physical labor of heavy agricultural projects, including preparation, assembly, and maintenance of feed and grain handling facilities. Operates a variety of hand and power tools, heavy equipment, various machinery, material handling equipment and computers.


  1. Essential Functions
    1. Material handling and storage; heavy lifting (50-90 lbs.), pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, walking, forward/above shoulder reaching and balancing for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
    2. Load or unload bundles, equipment or materials to/from trucks; move bundles, equipment or materials to storage or work areas using moving equipment, including fork- scissor- and aerial lifts.
    3. Working at varying heights by frequently ascending/descending structures safely by utilizing proper fall protection.
    4. See, understand and communicate signals/instructions from the ground or at heights.
    5. Work safely in tight, restricted spaces, following proper confined space procedures.
    6. Place blocks and outriggers to prevent capsizing when lifting heavy loads or direct others to do same.
    7. Assist crane operators by signaling to facilitate lifting, alignment, movement, placement or adjustment of machinery, equipment or materials.
    8. Bolt boom sections together to extend or modify boom for high lifting.
    9. Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy.
    10. Study and understand blueprints, instructions or schematics to determine work activities.
    11. Ability to travel up to 75% of the time as required.
    12. Punctual and consistent attendance at the assigned work location, as directed by the supervisor, is an essential function of this position

  2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    1. Knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in basic construction and ag millwright industries.
    2. Good mechanical, assembly and welding skills, including fabrication and cutting. Beneficial if skilled in welding galvanized, stainless and thin metals.
    3. Ability to remove, repair and/or replace defective, broken or obsolete parts of machine or structure and adjust clearances and alignment.
    4. Good math skills to calculate load/capacity, angles, leverage, measuring, etc.
    5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete daily activities according to work schedules.
    6. Maintain a clean job site; pick up/care for/store all tools, equipment and machinery and secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.
    7. Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
    8. Good communication skills – reading/writing/verbal English for efficiency in cooperative work assignments, to follow and promote safe work practices, and prepare and transmit consistent, accurate reports and time keeping.
    9. Good working knowledge of rigging set up, signals and repair.
    10. Knowledge of iPad technology to complete and upload job tickets, trip sheets and other necessary paperwork.
    11. Review daily work schedules to determine and prioritize work load.
    12. Apply safe shut-down and securing procedures.
    13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

  1. Education, Training and Experience
    1. High School Graduate, G.E.D., or equivalent.
    2. Experience in the agricultural or construction industries preferred.
    3. Experienced in proper use of tools, equipment and materials to assemble, install, dismantle, modify, repair and maintain machinery and facilities for smooth and continuous operation.
    4. Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
    5. Experience in verbal and hand signals to guide crane operators preferred.

  1. Work Context
    1. Attend work as part of a crew as scheduled.
    2. Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity.
    3. Must be able to frequently stand, climb, bend, kneel, and reach; lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object. (Occasionally lift 90 lbs., frequently lift 50 lbs.)
    4. Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
    5. Wear common protective or safety equipment as required by the job such as safety harness, hard hats, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves and hearing protection.
    6. Noise level is generally loud.
    7. Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
    8. Ability to sustain prolonged physical activity without fatigue.

  1. Special Requirements
    1. Valid driver’s license preferred.
    2. Must pass PPPO, General Construction Physical and Drug Screen.
    3. Must be 18 year’s old or older.
