What is earned media?

Earned media refers to publicity gained through organic means rather than paid advertising or owned channels. It includes mentions in news articles, shares on social media, word-of-mouth recommendations, reviews, and influencer coverage. Earned media is valuable because it typically comes from third parties, making it more credible and influential with audiences. Businesses often seek to generate earned media by creating newsworthy stories, engaging with the public, and building strong relationships with journalists and influencers.

How does an Earned Media professional typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

Earned Media professionals frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with PR, marketing, and content teams to amplify brand messaging and secure media coverage. They often coordinate with subject matter experts to develop compelling story angles and work closely with social media managers to extend the reach of earned placements. This collaboration ensures that campaigns are cohesive and that earned media efforts are aligned with broader organizational goals. Regular communication and strategic planning with these teams are essential for maximizing the impact of earned media initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Earned Media, and why are they important?

To excel in Earned Media, you need expertise in public relations, content strategy, media outreach, and analytics, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with media monitoring tools, PR platforms like Cision or Meltwater, and social listening systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, creativity, relationship-building, and adaptability are vital soft skills for securing media placements and responding to trends. These abilities ensure effective brand visibility, reputation management, and successful engagement with target audiences.
