What is a Dyno Tuning job?

A Dyno Tuning job involves optimizing a vehicle's engine performance using a dynamometer (dyno). The dyno measures horsepower, torque, and air-fuel ratios while adjustments are made to improve power, efficiency, and drivability. This process ensures the engine runs at its best by fine-tuning the ECU (engine control unit) settings, ignition timing, and fuel delivery. Dyno tuning is commonly used for performance vehicles, modified engines, or to maximize fuel efficiency and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Dyno Tuning position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Dyno Tuning, expertise in automotive mechanics, engine performance, and fuel management is crucial, typically acquired through technical training or ASE certification. Familiarity with dynamometers, engine management software, and diagnostic tools like wideband oxygen sensors is essential for precise calibration tasks. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication with both team members and customers set top performers apart. These skills ensure accurate tuning, customer satisfaction, and optimal engine performance in a safe workshop environment.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in Dyno Tuning?

A typical day for a Dyno Tuning specialist involves inspecting and preparing vehicles, setting up the dynamometer, and running controlled engine tests to evaluate performance metrics. You'll analyze data using specialized software, make real-time adjustments to fuel and ignition mappings, and collaborate with mechanics or performance specialists to troubleshoot issues. Customer consultations are common, as you'll often explain findings and recommend performance modifications. The role blends hands-on technical work with problem-solving and requires excellent communication to ensure that modifications meet client expectations and safety standards.

About Buddyโ€™s Speed World:
Buddyโ€™s Speed World is the high-performance division of BMI Inc. We specialize in building serious classic cars, hot rods, show cars, and high-performance vehicles. Our shop delivers uncompromising quality in custom fabrication, performance installations, engine builds, and tuning.
Located in the beautiful Lake Gaston area of North Carolina, we offer more than a job โ€” we offer a lifestyle surrounded by water, freedom, and a passionate community of car enthusiasts.
Our Core Values:
  • Integrity First โ€“ Do the right thing.
  • Own It โ€“ Take responsibility.
  • Exceed Expectations โ€“ Go the extra mile.
  • Team Over Ego โ€“ Check the ego at the door.
  • Relentless Improvement โ€“ Continuously improve everything you do.

Position Overview:
We are looking for an experienced Dyno Technician and Manager to take ownership of our Dynojet 424x Link chassis dyno operations. This is a hands-on leadership role combining technical dyno work, tuning, customer communication, scheduling, and oversight of performance shop projects. You will be the key person ensuring every vehicle leaving the dyno is safe, powerful, and properly tuned.
What Youโ€™ll Be Doing:
  • Operate and manage the Dynojet 424x Link dyno โ€” including safely hooking up and unhooking vehicles, performing baseline runs, and executing full tuning sessions.
  • Tune vehicles using platforms such as HP Tuners, Holley, and others to optimize horsepower, torque, drivability, and reliability.
  • Schedule dyno customers, manage daily/weekly dyno time slots, and coordinate with the performance shop team.
  • Communicate clearly with customers about project goals, build costs, expected performance gains, tuning plans, and results.
  • Analyze dyno data, provide accurate reports, and make recommendations for additional performance upgrades.
  • Oversee performance shop projects from a dyno perspective โ€” helping prioritize jobs, track progress, and ensure quality control.
  • Manage dyno-related parts inventory, sensors, supplies, and maintenance of the Dynojet system.
  • Assist with general performance shop tasks including fabrication support, installations, and troubleshooting when needed.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and highly organized dyno cell and workspace.
  • Mentor and support technicians as the shop grows.

What Weโ€™re Looking For:
  • Strong experience operating a Dynojet (or similar chassis dyno) โ€” specifically comfortable with the 424x Link system.
  • Proven tuning skills with aftermarket engine management systems (HP Tuners, Holley, etc.)
  • Excellent mechanical knowledge of high-performance vehicles, forced induction, engine theory, and vehicle dynamics.
  • Solid understanding of build costs, performance expectations, and realistic goal-setting with customers.
  • Outstanding customer communication and service skills โ€” you can explain technical details clearly and professionally.
  • Strong organizational abilities for scheduling, project management, and parts oversight.
  • Safety-first mindset with attention to detail during hook-up, testing, and tuning.
  • Team player who is humble, accountable, and committed to our core values.

Experience Requirements:
  • 3+ years of hands-on dyno operation and tuning experience in a performance or high-end automotive shop.
  • Background in performance builds, classic cars, hot rods, or late-model platforms (GM LS/LT, Ford Coyote, etc.) is highly preferred.

Compensation & Growth:
  • Highly competitive pay based on experience and proven tuning/dyno results: 75,000 โ€“ $105,000+ annually.
  • Performance incentives and bonuses tied to dyno utilization, customer satisfaction, and successful builds.
  • Clear path for growth and increased responsibility as our performance division expands.

Why Join Buddyโ€™s Speed World?
If youโ€™re passionate about dyno tuning, love turning raw performance data into real-world results, and want to play a key role in a growing high-performance shop, this is your opportunity. Work on exciting classic cars, hot rods, and custom builds in a beautiful lakeside community while being part of a tight-knit, values-driven team.
How to Apply:
Please send your resume along with:
  • A short note about your dyno and tuning experience (including platforms and types of vehicles youโ€™ve worked on).
  • Any dyno sheets, before/after results, or photos/videos of past tuning projects youโ€™ve completed (strongly encouraged).
Questions? Feel free to reach out โ€” weโ€™d love to hear from serious tuners and dyno professionals.
