Position Summary

The Senior Civil Engineer position willsupport the modification, expansion, or development of electric substations for Duke Energy Florida in Lake Mary, FL. This position will primarily focus on performing complex substation civil designs, mentoring junior engineers, reviewing consultant engineering firm designs, and continuing to improve our internal Civil Engineering procedures and job aids.

This is a career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve.

Responsibilities
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; apply extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position.

  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies, procedures and equipment.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.

Basic/Required Qualifications

For Senior Engineer:

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

For Engineer III:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and four (4) years of relevant experience.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Preferred Qualifications - for Senior Engineer level
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer

  • Skilled in Civil Engineering theories and principles. Progressive Civil Engineering experience with emphasis on highvoltage substations and utility infrastructure.

  • Proficient in researching engineering designs, evaluating alternatives, making sound decisions, and presenting recommendations.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to serve on multidisciplinary teams and interact with stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Skilled in the principles of project management.

  • Capable of managing multiple projects concurrently while meeting scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.

  • Ability to lead and mentor junior engineers and designers, including technical oversight and QA/QC review.

  • Knowledge of Civil Engineering applicable to electric substations, including:

    • Grading, drainage, and erosion & sediment control

    • Ability to read topographic and boundary surveys

    • Foundations (drilled piers, spread footings, piles)

    • Oil containment systems, fire walls, and retaining wall design

    • Strong understanding of geotechnical principles, soil reports, and foundation selection for substation applications

    • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NESC, ACI, ASCE, and local/state permitting requirements.

    • Structural/foundation analysis tools (MFAD, RISA, Mathcad).

    • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, StormWise, Inventor, or SAG10.

Additional Preferred Qualifications for Engineer III level


Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry.
Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.
Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility

Specific Requirements
  • Valid driver's license

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
