Position: Auto Driver
Contract: 183 days; 10 month employee
Salary Scale: Per approved school board salary scale (based on contracted hours)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
General Definition of Work: Performs semi-skilled work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Director of Transportation.
Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Essential Functions: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
Drives automobile; picks up and delivers students to and/or from school facilities, special events and field trips.
Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
Maintains internal cleanliness of assigned vehicle.
Obeys traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for automobile operations.
Transports only authorized students.
Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
Conducts periodic emergency vehicles; completes disciplinary forms as necessary.
Makes automobiles available for period maintenance.
May serve as a substitute Bus Driver, if qualified.
Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of the problems involved in operating assigned automotive equipment; general knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of streets; general knowledge of traffic rules, regulations and statutes; skill in the safe operation of the automotive equipment to which assigned; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, parents and general public; ability to work in all makes and models with and/or without climate control.
Education and Experience
Less than high school education and minimal experience working with children, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information. HumanI Interaction: Requires the ability to maintain a cordial and effective relationship with visitors and clients. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control motor vehicles and the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work at the work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 25 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time sitting. Sensory Requirements: Work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Some tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme heat or extreme cold, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, automobile, light to moderate traffic).
