Job description

Position Summary
The Driver Assistant supports the school bus driver by maintaining order on the bus and ensuring the safety of all passengers while boarding, riding, and exiting the vehicle.
Salary Range: $19.25 per hour
Schedule: Part-time; varying shifts based on seniority

  • Assist students with boarding the bus, getting to their seats, and safely exiting the bus.
  • Ensure all passengers are properly restrained while the bus is in motion.
  • Learn assigned bus routes and notify substitute drivers when necessary.
  • Maintain student behavior and order to prevent distractions to the driver.
  • Immediately report any incidents or concerns to the Driver Assistant Supervisor and Road Supervisor.
  • Release students only to individuals listed on the child release form and verify identification for unfamiliar or newly authorized individuals.
  • Communicate concerns regarding student health or behavior to the Driver Assistant Supervisor, Road Supervisor, and Dispatcher.
  • Assist with daily removal of trash and litter from the bus.
  • Perform other related duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
  • Maintain physical presence at the work site as required.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, including a Non-DOT medical card and Non-DOT drug screening.
  • Ability to pass the NYS DOE Physical Performance Test (drag 125 lbs. for 30 feet within 30 seconds).
  • Availability to work varying shifts; assignments based on seniority.
  • Willingness to attend employee meetings, safety sessions, and required training or retraining.
  • Maintains a calm, positive demeanor and provides professional customer service.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to safety management principles.
