DPE stands for Designated Pilot Examiner. A DPE is an individual authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct pilot practical tests and checkrides, including issuing pilot certificates and ratings. DPEs play a crucial role in assessing the skills and knowledge of pilot applicants to ensure they meet FAA standards. They are not FAA employees but are highly experienced pilots who have been designated to perform testing on behalf of the FAA.
