Security Specialist

The Tacoma Rescue Mission (TRM) is a faith-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to support all people - including clients, volunteers, community partners, and staff - to become their best. We provide emergency services such as shelter and meals to neighbors experiencing homelessness. We offer supportive housing and addiction recovery programs that promote self-sufficiency, sustainable transformation, and stability. Fosters a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all guests, clients, donors, volunteers, and staff by deterring unlawful activity, protecting TRM's population and property, and ensuring compliance of all established rules and regulations through a trauma-informed, person-first, and grace-based approach.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Interacts with all guests, clients, donors, volunteers, and staff, monitoring behavior and maintaining good rapport by providing excellent customer service and encouraging all to comply with TRM policies and procedures.
  • Patrols assigned campus regularly, including all hallways, stairwells, floors, bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchen/food storage, office spaces, and campus exterior/surroundings to assure that the campus is safe.
  • Works collaboratively with other staff, responding to all requests for assistance.
  • Manages security infringements and emergencies such as loitering, traffic or crowd control, trespassing, fire, medical situations, threats, and performs crisis intervention to de-escalate potential crisis situations as needed.
  • Ensures that daily documentation is kept concise and complete at all times, investigating all security related accidents/incidents and reporting to supervisor for follow up and direction.
  • Makes calls to police, fire department, and other first responders as directed and/or as needed.
  • Maintains resident confidentiality, properly storing and disposing documents per TRM standard.
  • Embodies the values that form our culture to meet the organization's mission of sharing God's love, hope, and support with our neighbors in need to uplift communities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support others and ensure an efficient and effective work environment.

Working Conditions:

Interacts in a relational manner with people from diverse backgrounds. Indoor and outdoor environment with light custodial duties.

Requirements:

  • Two years' experience in related work.
  • Experience working with or serving alongside marginalized communities.
  • Basic operating knowledge of office equipment, computers, and Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Effective de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to work in and effectively respond to a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
  • Capacity to accomplish multiple tasks within a short time.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in clear and effective written, verbal, and electronic communication.

Physical Requirements:

  • Actively moves for the duration of an entire shift on various surfaces (carpet, tile, concrete, etc.).
  • Occasionally moves quickly to respond to urgent situations.
  • Occasionally ascends/descends stairs to inspect all areas of the facility.
  • Communicates information and ideas so others will understand. Exchanges accurate information in these situations.
  • Observes details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Frequently moves boxes weighing up to 25 pounds across office for various needs.
  • Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Wears proper PPE (personal protective equipment) when necessary for exposure control.
