Job description

Position Summary:
Family Dollar is seeking a highly driven and experienced Director of Construction to lead the execution of our nationwide retail construction initiatives. This leadership role involves overseeing a team of project managers and driving operational excellence in construction delivery across an extensive portfolio of projects.
This role is critical in delivering cost-effective, timely, and high-quality store environments in support of Family Dollar's broader strategic objectives. The Director will be responsible for aligning construction execution with corporate priorities, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and ensuring compliance with all relevant building codes, safety standards, and internal policies.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
• Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for all construction projects, including new builds, remodels, and special projects.
• Lead and develop a high-performing construction team; manage performance, coach for development, and drive accountability.
• Serve as the escalation point for complex project issues and facilitate resolutions with internal and external stakeholders.
Construction Execution
• Ensure all construction projects are executed on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
• Oversee construction schedules and workflows for a portfolio of simultaneous projects across multiple geographies.
• Partner with Architecture, Portfolio, Facilities, Operations, and Real Estate to ensure alignment and cross-functional coordination.
Financial Management
• Develop and manage construction budgets at both project and portfolio levels.
• Monitor expenditures, manage cost controls, and identify savings and process efficiencies opportunities.
• Support project forecasting and capital planning processes in collaboration with Finance.
Compliance & Safety
• Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local building codes and OSHA safety standards.
• Champion jobsite safety and promote a culture of continuous improvement in construction practices and risk mitigation.
Vendor & Stakeholder Engagement
• Build relationships with general contractors, architects, engineers, and permitting agencies.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including Store Operations, Legal, and Merchandising, to meet business needs.
Qualifications:
• 10+ years of progressive experience in commercial retail construction management, including multi-site programs.
• 5+ years in a leadership role overseeing project management teams.
• Proven ability to manage large-scale capital construction programs with national reach.
• Deep knowledge of construction processes, permitting, scheduling, budgeting, and trade coordination.
• Familiarity with AIA (American Institute of Architects) contract documents and CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) formats is required.
• Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
• Proficient with construction management software and Microsoft Office tools; experience with NetSuite or Monday.com is a plus.
• A bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field is preferred.
Additional Information
This role requires 20% travel to project sites and may involve work outside standard business hours. The role will operate with high independence and be expected to drive projects to completion with limited oversight.
