General Summary:
The Sterile Processing Technician I assume responsibility for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of supplies, instrumentation and equipment dispensed to all surgical locations and other house-wide areas. Also participates in receipt, storage and distribution of supplies needed for Operating Room case carts as well as single supplies needed by patient care departments throughout the facility.
Department team members are authorized to have limited access to secured medication rooms to perform duties and responsibilities as defined in this job description. Any staff member requiring limited access to secured medication rooms must have a fully completed and signed Medication Security Agreement for Non-Licensed Personnel form on file and available upon request.
Responsibilities:
1. Decontaminates surgical instruments according to manufacturer's instructions.
2. Assembles trays in a manner that ensures devise sterility.
3. Operates sterilizer according to manufacturer's instruction ensuring every load has a biological.
4. Inspects instruments to ensure cleanliness and proper functionality using tools such as lighted magnification and sharpness testing materials.
5. Maintains documentation of sterilization processes.
6. Assembles case carts according to the picklist and deliver to the operating room.
7. Performs routine cleaning and disinfection activities to ensure a clean work environment.
8. Performs routine sterilizer testing including biological monitoring, leak test, and bowie dick test as appropriate.
9. Following established procedures selects appropriate High-level Disinfection method manual (Revital Ox)
10. Maintains clean and organized work area, ensuring workspace is functional for peer use upon work completion or as needed.
11. Select the correct sterilization methods (s) for the items (s) being sterilized.
12. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and immediately takes appropriate action such as reporting to SPD Leadership.
13. Dispenses and deliver instruments and equipment to nursing departments and clinics.
14. inspect items during the pick process to ensure package integrity remains intact package is within expiration date, and substitutions are appropriate.
15. Returns supplies not used after surgical procedures to their proper stock location.
16. Loads sterilizer carts in a way to ensure packaged items are not punctured or compromised, loads containers and wrapped items as recommended.
17. Run daily sterilizer tests on all sterilizers.
18. Interfaces with department tracking system for all functions of processing.
19. Meet all productivity expectation.
20. Maintains positive relationship with patients, customers, and co-workers.
21. Protects self. Co-workers, and facility by following policies and procedures concerning the prevention of spreading blood borne and airborne contaminates/diseases.
22. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
    ;
  • Credential(s): CRCST within 12 months of hire, if not already obtained
    ; Or CSPDT within 12 months of hire.
  • Experience:
    Required: One (1) year in a customer service role.
    Preferred: One (1) year of Sterile Processing experience and can assist in mentoring new staff.
