To thrive as a Discord Monitor, you need a solid understanding of online community management, familiarity with Discord's features, and knowledge of moderation best practices. Proficiency with Discord's moderation bots, server settings, and automated moderation tools is typically required. Strong communication, conflict resolution, and impartial decision-making are essential soft skills for effective moderation. These skills ensure a safe, welcoming, and well-organized server environment, which is crucial for community growth and engagement.

What is the difference between Discord Monitor vs Community Moderator?

AspectDiscord MonitorCommunity Moderator
Primary RoleMonitoring Discord servers for activity, spam, and rule violationsManaging community interactions, enforcing rules, and engaging members
Required SkillsAttention to detail, basic moderation tools, understanding of DiscordCommunication, conflict resolution, moderation tools
Work EnvironmentOnline, primarily Discord platformOnline, community platforms including Discord
CertificationsNone typically requiredOptional certifications in community management or moderation

While both roles involve overseeing online communities on Discord, a Discord Monitor primarily focuses on observing server activity and flagging issues, whereas a Community Moderator actively manages interactions, enforces rules, and fosters a positive environment. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by a Discord Monitor and how can they be effectively addressed?

As a Discord Monitor, one common challenge is handling disruptive behavior or conflicts among members while maintaining a positive community environment. Moderators need to balance enforcing rules with fostering open communication, which can sometimes be tricky. Effective strategies include staying impartial, utilizing moderation tools (such as mute, ban, or warning features), and collaborating with other moderators to share the workload. Clear communication and consistency in applying rules help build trust and keep the community healthy.

What are Discord Monitors?

Discord Monitors are individuals or automated bots responsible for observing activity within Discord servers to ensure that community guidelines and rules are being followed. Their main duties include moderating conversations, managing user behavior, handling reports of inappropriate content, and sometimes automating responses to certain activities. By maintaining a safe and welcoming environment, Discord Monitors help server communities thrive and stay organized. Depending on the server, their responsibilities may also include organizing events, answering user questions, or coordinating with other moderators.

Job description

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there's one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games.
We're looking for a Senior Indirect Tax Analyst to join Discord's global tax team and play a hands-on role in shaping our tax function as we scale. You'll own work across corporate income tax, indirect tax, tax provisions, and global operations-partnering directly with Finance, Engineering, Legal, and external advisors. This is a high-visibility role where your contributions will directly influence how Discord navigates complex, multi-jurisdictional tax challenges during a period of rapid global growth.
You'll tackle novel tax questions that come with building a platform used by over 200 million people worldwide-from digital services taxes to multi-entity structuring-and have real ownership over the solutions.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and intellectually curious, with a strong foundation in domestic and global indirect taxation and a desire to contribute to a high-impact tax function.
What you'll be doing
  • Manage indirect tax compliance end-to-end-prepare, analyze, and monitor Sales and Use tax, VAT/GST, and other obligations across multiple jurisdictions, coordinating with external advisors to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Prepare and review U.S. federal, state, and international corporate income tax returns, and own the quarterly and annual ASC 740 income tax provision process including supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Drive international tax workstreams including transfer pricing documentation, intercompany transactions, cross-border compliance, and tax analysis related to global expansion and new product launches.
  • Manage responses to tax authority notices and audits, and research tax incentives, credits, and legislative developments that impact the company.
  • Prepare month-end and quarter-end close workpapers, reconciliations, and journal entries, including tax reporting and analysis for equity award programs.
  • Serve as the go-to technical resource for the company's tax technology platforms-administer systems, drive implementation of new tools, and optimize existing compliance software.
  • Identify and execute opportunities to improve tax processes, documentation, internal controls, and automation across the function, and assist with ad-hoc and special tax projects as needed.

What you should have
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 3-6 years of corporate tax experience, preferably in a public accounting firm or technology company
  • Strong understanding of U.S. Sales and Use Tax, Global VAT/GST, and U.S. federal and state corporate income taxation
  • Hands-on experience with ASC 740 income tax provisions
  • Strong analytical skills with a track record of identifying issues, researching tax authority guidance, and driving to resolution
  • Effective communicator who can manage competing priorities and collaborate across Finance, Legal, and Engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA or Master's in Taxation (MST)
  • Experience with technology or high-growth companies
  • Working knowledge of international tax concepts including transfer pricing, Pillar Two/GloBE rules, and cross-border compliance
  • Hands-on experience with tax technology platforms (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, OneSource, Alteryx, or similar)

This position is US-based and can be remote but if you live in the Bay Area, you're welcome to work from our beautiful SF office.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $144,000 to $162,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity, or benefits.
Why Discord?
Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We're a multiplatform, multigenerational and multiplayer platform that helps people deepen their friendships around games and shared interests. We believe games give us a way to have fun with our favorite people, whether listening to music together or grinding in competitive matches for diamond rank. Join us in our mission! Your future is just a click away!
Discord is committed to inclusion and providing reasonable accommodations during the interview process. We want you to feel set up for success, so if you are in need of reasonable accommodations, please let your recruiter know.
