Job description

Overview

This is a Hybrid role in Richardson, TX (In-office Tuesday & Wednesday). 

Although Richardson, TX is preferred, remote candidates will also be considered.

The Director of Accounting reports to the Senior Vice President, Controller. This position leads financial accounting for all insurance products. This role oversees financial reporting, revenue and commission accounting, payments to subproducers and advertising space license fees arising from insurance products, while driving process excellence, automation and data-driven decision making.

This position plays a critical leadership role in transforming accounting operations through technology, strengthening internal controls, and delivering timely, accurate, and insightful financial information to senior leadership. The Director will lead a team of U.S.-based and offshore professionals and partner cross-functionally with FP&A, Treasury, IT, and insurance business leaders.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and/or perform monthly financial statement close and related reporting activities for all insurance products. Ensure all journal entries, account reconciliations and monthly reporting packages are completed according to the monthly close schedule.
  • Performs balance sheet and profit and loss account analyses, including documenting variance explanations and comparisons to prior periods for discussion with Accounting and Insurance product leadership.
  • Supervise, train, develop, and mentor the accounting team. Review work of Philippines insurance operation team.
  • Review new contracts and payment vouchers to ensure payments to clients are calculated and paid properly.
  • Actively lead accounting for and review of amounts for contingent commission owed the Company under agency agreements.
  • Collaborate with Treasury in managing and reporting restricted cash accounts for the insurance carriers.
  • Develop and implement critical financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Ability to identify and implement automation opportunities across close, reporting and internal controls. Lead finance transformation initiatives, including close optimization, system enhancements, and workflow automation.
Qualifications

Required:

  • CPA and Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting
  • Experience managing and developing teams, including offshore resources
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with data analysis tools
  • Superior data analytics skills and experience working with large datasets using data query and analytics tools (Power BI, Access, Alteryx)
  • Experience leveraging automation and emerging technologies (AI tools) to improve accounting processes (e.g., reconciliations, anomaly detection, journal entry generation).
  • Contract review experience
  • Initiative and ability to work independently and solve problems
  • Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities while achieving fixed deadlines

Preferred:

  • Public accounting experience (Big 4 strongly preferred)
  • Experience in insurance or commission-based revenue environments
  • Experience with Oracle Fusion ERP
  • Familiarity with data visualization and analytics tools (Power BI, Alteryx, etc.)
