Job description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

This position reports to the Vice President of Operations and exists for two reasons, 1) to manage a group of Silgan manufacturing facilities and insure each of the Plant Managers comply with the Silgan set of values as outlined in the Plant Managers' job description, and 2) work with the commercial team to develop winning business strategies for both organic and new customer growth.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

LEADERSHIP:

Effective leadership is a key requirement for this job. It must be consistently demonstrated across all functional areas.

  • Develop an operations environment and culture that maximize the contribution and results of all personnel through frequent plant visits, meetings, audits of personnel performance and results, feedback on expectations, and joint development of corrective action plans.
  • Meet frequently with Plant Management and gain an understanding (listen) of plant issues.
  • At least once per quarter have a formal (agenda) business review meeting with the Plant Management.
  • Manage efficiently and knowledgeably by walking around to observe and analyze the issues firsthand.
  • Ensure solutions are team based with complete acceptance by the Plant Management team.
  • Effective and responsive communications on all levels of the organization, i.e., e-mails, voicemail, and conference calls.
  • Ensure key personnel view you as easily approachable at any time.
  • Recognize good performance and provide feedback.
  • Review performance of key personnel on a regular basis.
  • Provide regular feedback on expectations
  • Assist the Plant Management with annual budgets and capital plans

OPERATIONS OPTIMIZATION:

Majority of the time will be spent in providing direction, counseling, development and guidance of each plant manager and their key staff members across a wide subject list of plant operating responsibilities. These include both short term and long-term solutions for:

  • Safety and Environmental Programs & Performance
    • Plants are following Silgan Safety Standards
    • Proven safety incentive plan is in place and work with HR group to revise as necessary
  • Silgan HR Policies
  • Quality Improvement programs for our products and customers
    • Key indices are reviewed with Plant Management on a regular basis
    • Monitor and provide feedback on housekeeping and GMP expectations
    • Corrective action plans include root cause analysis and other statistical tools and methods as required
  • Customer service practices and actual customer satisfaction
  • Plant productivity and scheduling practices improvements.
    • Capacity planning including infrastructure requirements to ensure future growth and customer demands will be met
  • Action plans to achieve and/or exceed plant efficiency OEE goals
  • Effective scheduling and maximizing use of idle assets
  • Machinery and molding technical issues
    • Coordinate internal and/or external resources to address machine and/or molding issues.
  • Plant financial performance
    • Encourage plant managers to run their facilities like it is their own business
  • Ensure key managers understand their role in controllable costs
  • Assist the plants in developing forecasts
  • Review monthly profit & loss report and develop action plan to favorably impact future financial performance
  • Cost reduction projects/programs
  • Overall plant staff development and job enrichment practices to develop personnel.
  • Engage and interact with all employees in the plants, use common sense, and gain people's respect with your actions.
  • Capital project requirements and support plant needs for investments.

CROSS FUNCTIONAL COORDINATION:

Director's role is to coordinate the activities of operations, sales, pricing and technology to support the growth and profitability targets in areas of responsibility.

  • Sales coordination is required to meet customers' expectations in a broad range of functions from order entry through delivery of a product on time. It also involves working with sales to achieve business growth.
  • Pricing coordination of operational inputs to maximize the market competitiveness with our proposals and bids to customers that result in business wards.
  • Technology coordination with Norcross to achieve the best-in-class machinery and operational systems is required to position our business with the best machinery and tools to compete in the marketplace. Also, working with Norcross to prioritize use of shared resources for best utilization of talent and time.
  • Be a project leader, or, at a minimum, a project team member for major projects.
  • Optimization of equipment utilization between plants - making sure assets are used where it makes best business sense.

EDUCATION:

Required: Bachelors

Preferred: Masters

EXPERIENCE:

Required: 10+ years of leadership in a manufacturing setting

Preferred: Plastics industry experience
