Job description

Director of Technical Training – Automotive

Auto Hospitality Group | Houston, TX

14 Locations | Full-Time | Field-Based

The Opportunity

Auto Hospitality Group is looking for a Director of Technical Training to build and lead technician development across our 14 automotive service locations.

This is not a corporate training position where you spend your days building PowerPoints from an office. We want someone who enjoys being in the shops, around technicians, teaching, coaching, and driving development firsthand.

You'll have the opportunity to take ownership of our technician training program and help us build a consistent development system across a growing automotive organization.

Your mission is straightforward: make our technicians better.

That means improving technical knowledge, increasing ASE certifications, identifying skill gaps, developing technicians at different stages of their careers, and creating accountability around continued development.

What You'll Own

  • Build and continuously improve our company-wide technician training program.
  • Conduct hands-on and classroom-based technical training across our 14 locations.
  • Develop quarterly and ongoing training calendars based on technician and shop needs.
  • Help technicians prepare for and earn ASE certifications, including tracking progress and maintaining accountability.
  • Assess technicians' current skill levels and identify individual development opportunities.
  • Create clear development paths for entry-level, General Service, B-Level, and advanced technicians.
  • Work directly with shop leadership to identify training gaps and determine where additional coaching is needed.
  • Spend significant time inside our locations working directly with technicians and managers.
  • Coordinate and leverage manufacturer, vendor, online, and third-party training resources when appropriate.
  • Track certifications, training completion, participation, and technician development across the organization.
  • Build training that is practical, focused, and immediately applicable in the shop.
  • Help create a culture where technician education and professional development are expected—not optional.
  • Adjust the training program as our business, technology, and technician population evolve.

What We're Looking For

We aren't looking for someone who wants to tell us how training was done at their last company.

We're looking for someone who can bring experience and ideas to the table, understand how we operate, and help build a program that works for our technicians and our shops.

The right person is:

  • ASE Master Certified, ideally including L1 Advanced Engine Performance
  • Experienced as an automotive technician with strong real-world diagnostic and repair knowledge
  • Experienced in technician training, coaching, mentoring, or technical development
  • Comfortable teaching both in a classroom and standing next to a technician in a service bay
  • Able to take complicated technical concepts and explain them in a simple, practical, engaging way
  • Organized enough to manage training and certification progress across 14 locations
  • Comfortable holding technicians accountable to development goals
  • Proactive and self-directed—you see something that needs to be built and take ownership of it
  • Flexible and willing to adapt instead of being locked into one training philosophy or system
  • Energetic, relatable, and capable of earning credibility with technicians and shop leadership

Experience developing technicians within a multi-location automotive organization—such as an independent repair group, dealership group, tire/service organization, or national automotive service company—is highly valued.

What This Role Is NOT

  • This is not a remote position.
  • We don't want our technical trainer disconnected from the technicians they're responsible for developing.
  • You'll regularly rotate between our locations, work directly with our teams, and see firsthand where technicians are succeeding and where they need help. Mileage or appropriate travel reimbursement will be provided for required travel between locations.
  • We also aren't looking for training simply for the sake of training. Our goal isn't to overwhelm technicians with information or turn every class into an advanced engineering seminar.

Training needs to translate to the shop floor.

If you can teach something complicated in a way that a technician understands, remembers, and can actually use the next morning, that's what we're looking for.

Why Join Auto Hospitality Group?

  • We're building something different in automotive service.
  • As we continue to grow, technician development is becoming an increasingly important part of our organization. This role will have significant freedom to help shape what technical training looks like across the company.
  • You'll have the opportunity to build a program, develop technicians, improve careers, strengthen our shops, and create a training infrastructure capable of scaling alongside our organization.

If you're an experienced automotive professional who loves developing people as much as fixing cars, we'd like to talk.
