Position Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $45,000-$50,000, plus benefits
Reports to: Rector, Rev. David Cumbie
Mission
The mission of Holy Cross Island School is to provide a joyful, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment where children grow in their knowledge and love of the Lord Jesus Christ, are formed by a Christian worldview, and are prepared academically, socially, and spiritually for primary school.
Because HIS School is a ministry of the church, the Director is expected to be a full member of the Church of the Holy Cross and fully aligned with the church's vision, values, mission, and beliefs.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Spiritual Leadership and Church Alignment
  • Support the Church of the Holy Cross, its leadership, mission, and vision.
  • Pray continually for God's provision, wisdom, and guidance for the school.
  • Lead staff prayer times and devotions, helping cultivate a school culture that reflects the love of Jesus Christ.
  • Attend the Annual Meeting and other important church or school events as required.
  • Work with the Rector to set and maintain the vision and mission of Holy Cross Island School.

Staff Leadership and Development
  • Lead, encourage, support, and develop the HIS School staff.
  • Plan and lead teacher workdays that encourage teachers, motivate creativity, and build unity among the staff.
  • Support, train, and disciple the Assistant Director in his or her leadership and management role.
  • Manage staff hiring, supervision, discipling, and termination in consultation with the Rector.
  • Ensure staff training and continuing education requirements are met, including DSS licensing requirements, CPR, child safety, educational development, and 20 hours of annual continuing education.

School Administration and Operations
  • Ensure that all DSS and DHEC regulations are followed in order to maintain the school's licensure.
  • Manage the HIS School application process, registration process, and waiting list.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for HIS School, regularly communicating with current and interested parents and families.
  • Plan and manage the school calendar, including special events, holiday celebrations, breaks, and other school-wide activities.
  • Maintain required school documents, policies, student records, emergency information, medical information, and immunization records.
  • Oversee school communications and public-facing materials, including the HIS School website, parent handbook, and yearbook.
  • Coordinate facility upgrades and maintenance needs with the Holy Cross Operations Associate.

Financial and Administrative Oversight
  • Work with the financial comptroller and Holy Cross finance staff to manage the school budget, tuition payments, and substitute timesheets.

Parent and Family Communication
  • Maintain positive relationships with children, parents, and families.
  • Communicate clearly and regularly with parents about school activities, calendar items, and needs.
  • Conduct parent conferences as needed regarding child behavioral, developmental, or other concerns.

Qualifications and Expectations
The ideal candidate will:
  • Demonstrate a clear Christian faith and commitment to the mission of HIS School as a ministry of the Church of the Holy Cross.
  • Be or become a full member of the Church of the Holy Cross.
  • Be fully aligned with the vision, values, mission, and beliefs of the Church of the Holy Cross.
  • Have experience in early childhood education, preschool leadership, administration, or a related field.
  • Be able to lead staff with wisdom, encouragement, clarity, and care.
    Communicate well with parents, staff, church leadership, and the broader community.
  • Understand and maintain compliance with all applicable DSS, DHEC, and licensing requirements.
  • Possess strong organizational, administrative, and relational skills.
    Be committed to creating a joyful, safe, loving, and Christ-centered environment for children and families.
