Job description

The Director of MEP Engineering will provide strategic leadership, technical management, and operational oversight for the firm's Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering practice. Operating at the intersection of complex building/infrastructure design and executive management, this role is responsible for driving technical excellence, ensuring strict compliance across multidisciplinary engineering deliverables, leading departmental growth, and maintaining high standards for project execution.
The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader holding an active Electrical Engineering Professional Engineer (PE) license, possessing deep expertise in power distribution and building systems alongside strong cross-functional acumen in mechanical (HVAC) and plumbing design.
Pay: $170,000 - $ 210,000

Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Professional Registration
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET-accredited institution. Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Management is a plus.
  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering is strictly required. Multi-state registration density (or eligibility for NCEES record reciprocity) is highly preferred.
Experience
  • Total Experience: 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in MEP design, facility infrastructure, or architectural engineering consulting.
  • Leadership Experience: 5+ years in a direct management or director-level leadership role managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, budgets, and project schedules.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Deep technical expertise in medium- and low-voltage electrical design, utility service coordination, standby power systems, short-circuit/coordination studies, and protective relaying.
  • Strong working knowledge of integrated mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of national building codes, energy codes, and electrical standards (NEC, IEEE, NFPA, IBC).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with industry tools, including BIM/Revit, AutoCAD, electrical calculation software (ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower), and energy modeling software.
  • Excellent commercial aptitude, negotiation skills, and team management capabilities.

Key Responsibilities
Departmental Leadership & Strategic Growth
  • Practice Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage the MEP engineering department, including discipline leads across Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing functions.
  • Resource Management: Direct resource allocation, workload forecasting, staffing strategies, and utilization metrics across all active projects.
  • Performance & Development: Conduct evaluations, establish technical standards, drive professional development initiatives, and cultivate a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Strategic Expansion: Partner with executive leadership to establish long-term departmental growth targets, adopt modern workflows (e.g., BIM/Revit, digital integration), and expand service capabilities.
Technical Leadership & Quality Control
  • Electrical Authority: Serve as the primary Professional Engineer (PE) for electrical design, signing/sealing engineering drawings, calculations, and regulatory packages for power distribution, grounding, lighting, and emergency power systems.
  • Multidisciplinary Oversight: Provide high-level technical guidance and quality control (QA/QC) across Mechanical (HVAC) and Plumbing engineering workflows to ensure seamless, fully coordinated building system designs.
  • Standards & Compliance: Establish and maintain firm-wide engineering standards, design protocols, and compliance procedures in accordance with NEC, NFPA, IBC, energy codes, and local utility standards.
  • Constructability & Review: Perform comprehensive reviews of construction documents, specifications, and scope definitions to guarantee code compliance, system reliability, and field constructability.
Project Execution & Business Development
  • Client & Stakeholder Interface: Act as the senior technical point of contact for clients, architects, utility providers, regulatory agencies, and general contractors.
  • Proposal & Estimating Support: Collaborate with business development and estimating teams to define engineering scopes, write proposals, prepare fee estimates, and lead technical presentations for potential clients.
  • Value Engineering & Field Support: Lead value engineering initiatives to optimize capital cost, constructability, and operational efficiency. Resolve complex technical challenges during design, construction, commissioning, and field troubleshooting.
