THE COMPANY

The Low Income Investment Fund is a non-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that mobilizes capital and partners to achieve opportunity, equity and wellbeing for people and communities. LIIF innovates financial solutions to create more equitable outcomes for all by building and preserving affordable homes, quality educational opportunities from early childhood through higher education, health clinics, healthy food retail and community facilities. In this way, LIIF provides a bridge between private capital markets and communities. LIIF’s headquarters is in San Francisco and has offices in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, and Washington D.C.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Chief Development Officer and may have at least one direct report.

JOB SUMMARY

The Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF) is seeking a strategic, mission-driven Director of Development to lead and manage LIIF’s institutional fundraising function. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Director of Development provides enterprise-wide leadership for development strategy, execution, systems, and team management, driving LIIF’s multi-million-dollar annual fundraising goals.

This role is responsible for setting and implementing fundraising strategies and strengthening the systems and processes that support sustainable growth. The Director of Development leads cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and reporting for philanthropic, corporate, financial institution, and public-sector funders in support of LIIF’s programs and national initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy, Leadership, and Department Management

  • Serve as a senior leader within the Development team, partnering with the CDO to set organizational fundraising strategy, priorities, and annual revenue targets.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and management of the Development department, including goal-setting, work planning, performance management, and professional development.
  • Translate organizational priorities into clear fundraising plans, pipelines, and accountabilities across programmatic, national, and regional efforts.
  • Evaluate new funding opportunities and lead go/no-go decision-making, ensuring alignment with LIIF’s strategy, capacity, and financial goals.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Executive Team members and VPs to align fundraising strategy with program growth, policy priorities, and financial planning.

Institutional Fundraising & Funder Strategy

  • Lead strategy for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a diverse portfolio of foundations, banks, government agencies, and corporate partners.
  • Develop high-level funding concepts, value propositions, and pitch strategies that advance LIIF’s national and regional initiatives.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of priority national and regional funders while guiding team members on prospect strategy and relationship management.
  • Serve as a key representative of LIIF with external funders, positioning the organization as a trusted national partner.

Grant Development & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Oversee the development and submission of complex, high-dollar grant proposals and government applications, ensuring quality, competitiveness, and timeliness.
  • Coordinate closely with Programs, Lending, and Finance to design fundable initiatives, develop budgets, and ensure compliance with funder requirements.
  • Support and advise Executive Team and Senior Management in fundraising efforts, including funder meetings, site visits, and presentations.

Systems, Reporting, and Infrastructure Oversight

  • Provide strategic oversight of development systems and infrastructure, including Salesforce and related grant management tools.
  • Establish and maintain best practices for data integrity, pipeline management, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Oversee all institutional grant reporting to ensure accuracy, consistency, and on-time submission.
  • Use data and dashboards to assess fundraising performance, inform strategy, and support organizational decision-making.

Team Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Support CDO in managing development staff, including assigning portfolios, setting expectations, and providing coaching and feedback.
  • Build team capacity by strengthening systems, workflows, and institutional knowledge.
  • Foster a collaborative, results-oriented, and mission-aligned team culture.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of LIIF’s mission and strategic objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10–15 years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, institutional fundraising, or related fields, with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
  • Proven success designing and executing fundraising strategies for multi-million-dollar budgets.
  • Deep expertise in institutional fundraising, including foundations, financial institutions, corporate partners, and government funding.
  • Strong experience managing teams, systems, and complex cross-functional projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data and systems (e.g. Salesforce) to drive strategy and accountability.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex work into compelling funder narratives.
  • Strong organizational judgment, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Entrepreneurial, collaborative leadership style with a deep commitment to LIIF’s mission and values.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

LIIF offers a hybrid work environment with flexibility to balance in-office and remote work. However, all employees are expected to work on-site at least two (2) days per week. The successful candidate may be expected to travel occasionally for meetings, trainings, conferences, or other Company sponsored events.
