The Town of La Plata is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Director of Engineering to lead the Town's engineering operations and Capital Improvement Program. This role is ideal for a candidate who excels at guiding infrastructure project delivery, establishing engineering standards, managing technical staff, and collaborating with community partners.

About the Role

The Director of Engineering provides strategic leadership for the planning, design, and construction of Town infrastructure. This includes roadway projects, stormwater and drainage work, facility improvements, park enhancements, and streetscape efforts. The Director also manages consultants and contractors and serves as a key technical advisor to Town leadership. 


Key Responsibilities

Lead the planning and delivery of the Town's multi-year Capital Improvement Program with clear attention to schedule, budget, quality, and regulatory requirements. 

Oversee engineering design reviews, technical standards, permitting, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. 

Manage procurement processes for engineering and construction services along with contract administration and performance oversight. 

Coordinate projects with internal departments as well as residents, businesses, developers, and regional agencies. 

Supervise engineering staff and support a work culture focused on safety, service, and accountability. 

Assist with grant efforts, long-range planning, and special projects as needed. 

Starting Salary Range: $122,750 - $141,170, based on experience
Status: Full-time, Exempt

Qualifications & Competencies

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal engineering, public infrastructure, or capital project delivery, including project management and construction administration.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or lead experience (may include leading project teams, directing consultants, or managing staff).

Preferred Candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (State of Maryland or ability to obtain within one year).
  • Project Management (PMP, CAPM) or equivalent.
  • Experience is in small/medium municipal environments. 
  • Familiarity with public procurement, grant-funded capital projects, and relevant state/federal compliance requirements.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
