Job description

A Day in the Life:

Our TNC (Transportation Network Companies) team is the backbone of Hertz's partnerships with leading rideshare platforms like Uber and Lyft. We are transforming how our vehicles integrate with mobility services at scale, and we need a Director of Engineering who can turn that vision into reality. This role is accountable for building and leading a high-performance engineering organization that moves fast and delivers. You will set direction, develop talent, and ensure we ship reliable, scalable systems that power the future of transportation.

We expect the starting salary to be around $175,000  but will be commensurate with experience.

What You'll Do:

  • People Leadership: Build, hire, and retain a high-performance engineering team that moves fast. You will own 1:1s, performance and career conversations, and the development of every engineer on your team.
  • Technical Direction: Partner with engineering and product leadership to set technical and product roadmap priorities. Ensure the team's architecture and practices support scalability, security, and long-term maintainability.
  • Delivery & Execution: Own delivery for TNC initiatives. Align the team on goals, remove blockers, and sustain high-velocity delivery while balancing short-term results with sustainable engineering practices.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with product, business, operations, and external partners to shape requirements, timelines, and solutions that meet business objectives.
  • Team Health & Culture: Foster an inclusive, collaborative culture and promote technical rigor, ownership, and continuous improvement across the team.

  • Standards & Process: Define and evolve team processes, hiring bar, and engineering standards. Support incident response and reliability improvements.

  • Strategic Influence: Represent the TNC engineering team in leadership discussions and advocate for the headcount, tools, and investments needed to succeed.

What We're Looking For:

We are looking for a leader who can operate at the intersection of people, product, and technology. Ideal candidates bring:

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 8+ years in software engineering, including 1+ years directly managing and developing engineers.

  • People Management: A track record of hiring, coaching, and growing engineers; running performance cycles and career conversations; and building inclusive, high-trust, high-performance teams that deliver with high velocity.

  • Technical Depth: A strong software engineering background and the ability to credibly guide architecture, review designs, and partner with engineering leaders on technical decisions. Experience with backend systems, APIs, and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) is expected.

  • Delivery & Prioritization: A track record of leading teams to ship high-impact products with high velocity, and the ability to balance business priorities with technical debt and reliability.

  • Collaboration: Strong communication and stakeholder management, and experience driving alignment across product, engineering, business, and operations partners.

  • Growth Mindset: A commitment to your own and your team's growth, and comfort with ambiguity and change as the business evolves.

  • Experience in mobility, ridesharing, telematics, or integrating large-scale third-party platforms is a plus.
