This Opportunity
WSP USA is currently initiating a search for a Civil & Earthworks Jr Designer for our US Mine Waste Civil Design and Drafting Team for our Reno, NV office. Participate in projects with our Mining group and contribute to a dynamic organization dedicated to achieving client objectives and addressing their challenges.
In this role you will work independently or under general to minimal supervision to provide technical design and CADD support on projects. Your work will contribute to the development of designs and specifications utilized in mining, planning, transportation, infrastructure, and technical services business lines. Tasks may include developing skills with CADD design on projects. Generates accurate and concise deliverables regarding assigned aspects of the project. Responsibilities are carried out with precision and diligence, consistently meeting or surpassing established industry standards for design, accuracy, and functionality.

  • Working within our US Mine Waste Team on civil and geotechnical engineering projects
    • Mine infrastructure (tailings, heap leach pad, waste rock, stockpile, embankments, access roads designs)
    • Stormwater and surface-water controls (channel and pond design)
    • Landfill design and remediation
    • Power sector and water treatment facilities
    • Reclamation
    • Groundwater science
  • Create, modify and develop drawing packages (plans, profiles, sections, details, etc.), figures, sketches, etc., primarily in civil design as directed by the Team Leader, team members, and/or project engineer(s). These may include a number of components but generally include the following:
    • Facility design, grading, storage capacity, and liner systems
    • Geotechnical plans, sections, and details
    • Design layout
    • Surface generation, manipulation and display
    • Material take-off calculations - Volumetrics
    • As-built survey evaluation.

    • Analysis
  • Ensure quality assurance in drafting and design plans by adhering to company CADD standards, proper filing protocols, and established workflows across the entirety of the project scope.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and be committed to team approach and outcomes. Engage with key project stakeholders to understand constraints and identify opportunities for innovative design, ensuring your work aligns with project objectives.
  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, concepts, blueprints, schematics, data, verbal or written specifications, technical drawings, rough sketches, diagrams, and other matrices to support drafting and design activities for single, multi-phase, or multi-site project work.
  • Under general supervision, use Autodesk Civil 3d to assist with basic design details and prepare drawings which require a high degree of precision.
  • Provide technical drafting and design assistance that accounts for the proper illustration, fit form, and function using geometric dimensioning, tolerance and quantity calculations, while ensuring the construction and maintainability of designs according to design standard specifications.
  • Exhibit basic knowledge of current drafting and design support practices. Carry out assigned project design work as part of an integral team adhering to company, technical and commercial standards.
  • Manage production of multiple drawings and multiple projects at the same time; using good judgment to identify alternatives to assist in the resolution of design problems; taking limited information from the engineers and creating high level design packages; and manage time efficiently which includes planning, organizing, prioritizing, and following through on a variety of tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Assist with verifying calculations, design, change orders, interpretation of contract plans and specifications, and escalating any issues or technical problems for appropriate resolution.
  • Ensure the specification of dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Associates degree from accredited Technical School or College in CADD/Engineering technology, or equivalent required
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Autodesk AutoCAD 2024 or newer, prioritizing the use of advanced and efficient tools and workflows within these platforms. Key competencies include working with external references, annotative objects, sheet sets. Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3d 2024 or newer, with knowledge of surfaces, alignments, profiles, COGO points, data shortcuts, and other related functions, is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
    • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication abilities, effectively, both verbally and in writing, conveying ideas in a clear and professional manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrates strong self-leadership, attention to detail, a willingness to learn new skills, ability to multitask, follow instructions, and adhere to company policies.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in working both autonomously and on teams while adhering to supervisory guidance, and effectively collaborates as a team member to achieve organizational goals.
  • Willingness to adapt to project schedules, which could sometimes require working outside the standard workweek, to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Travel may be necessary at times, contingent upon the requirements of individual projects. Which may include working in remote settings at project locations, for short durations.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize multiple projects/tasks and respond to the needs of several people.
