Join Duke Department of Pathology!

The Department of Pathology at the Duke University School of Medicine seeks a full-time academic transfusion medicine physician to serve as Associate Medical Director of the Transfusion Services at Duke University Hospital.

Duke Transfusion Services supports Duke University Hospital, a 1,057-bed tertiary care academic medical center, and provides consultative support to three regional hospitals within the Duke Health System. The service issues approximately 38,000 red blood cell units and 17,000 apheresis platelet units annually and maintains AABB accreditation for both its Blood Bank/Transfusion Service and Immunohematology Reference Laboratory.

Duke University Hospital is home to nationally recognized programs in solid organ transplantation, adult and pediatric oncology, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies, neonatal intensive care, high-risk obstetrics, cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgery, and Level I trauma care. This position offers the opportunity to practice transfusion medicine in a dynamic, high-acuity environment while contributing to the academic missions of patient care, education, and research.

Opportunity:

  • Full-time faculty appointment in the Department of Pathology, Duke University School of Medicine, at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments.
  • The successful candidate will join the Transfusion Medicine faculty and provide clinical oversight and expert consultation across the full spectrum of transfusion medicine services, including the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory. Opportunities to participate in translational and clinical research are encouraged. Therapeutic apheresis is not included in the responsibilities of this position.
  • The candidate will play an active role in the education and mentorship of pathology residents, medical students, and trainees from related specialties. Additional responsibilities include participation in departmental, institutional, and hospital committees.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a MD or DO degree and are excellent diagnosticians with superior communication skills who function well in a team setting.
  • The successful candidate must be board-certified or eligible by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/ Transfusion Medicine and be eligible for licensure in the State of North Carolina.
