Job description

We are looking for a Sr. Director of Bioinformatics to join our growing company. Being successful in our goal of delivering novel proteomic insights to the world hinges on our ability to analyze and understand large, complex, and diverse data sets that result from our experimental efforts, surfacing any key insights that might be hidden within. A candidate stepping into this highly visible role will provide both technical and people leadership for diverse bioinformatics teams and work with R&D leaders to define strategic direction.

This position will report to the SVP of Product Development and is located in San Carlos, CA. A minimum of three days per week in office is required.

Responsibilities
  • You will lead, manage, mentor, and grow several teams of bioinformaticians across a wide range of experience levels, areas of expertise, and scopes of responsibility

  • You will be a true thought partner to the experimental, engineering, and product teams working alongside them to guide next steps, prioritize tradeoffs, and accelerate learning

  • You will work with the commercial and software teams to translate bioinformatics capabilities into scalable, reliable customer solutions.

  • You will guide the design of individual experiments as well as shape broader experimental strategy and priorities.

  • You will be responsible for the successful delivery of data analyses and processing solutions in both R&D and customer-facing product context

  • You will operate effectively in fast-moving, ambiguous environments, balancing risk, setting priorities, and helping teams navigate uncertainty

  • You will provide hands‑on technical contributions as appropriate to your teams’ strengths and gaps

  • As a member of our leadership team, you will be expected to drive corporate strategy & initiatives, be a positive cultural role model, and be one of Nautilus’s ambassadors to the world!

Requirements
  • You have 15+ years of relevant experience in a high performing biotechnology organization, including 10+ years of experience in a leadership role

  • You have a PhD in Bioinformatics or a related field

  • You have a proven track record of leading many bioinformatics teams to success on very complex projects that bring together a wide variety of disciplines and skill sets

  • You have demonstrated experience partnering with scientists developing novel biochemical approaches or assays.

  • You know how to create and nurture highly performing bioinformatics teams through a combination of coaching, hiring, performance reviews, technical mentorship, and other management techniques

  • You are fluent in a wide variety of statistical analysis skills, data processing and visualization approaches, programming languages and environments, biological experimental techniques, and the ability to quickly acquire expertise in new topics on the fly.

  • You are a creative thinker capable of developing new foundational approaches for extracting value from entirely novel data sets and generating actionable conclusions from imperfect data (e.g. missing values, batch effects, highly-skewed distributions, outliers, etc.)

  • You have strong organization, communication, problem solving, and project management skills, and a willingness to jump in to help wherever it is needed

  • You are a leader who is trusted by everyone within the organization and can lead directly as well as through collaboration & influence

  • You have fun when building complex systems that solve large, novel problems while working side‑by‑side with experts from a variety of disciplines

  • Travel required up to 20% of the time
