Position Overview
The Deputy Director of Operations provides strategic, operational, and people leadership across multiple core banking operational units including atm and cards services, deposit operations, electronic payments, and treasury management support operations. This role acts as a second-in-command to the Head of Operations, ensuring efficient, compliant, and customer-centric execution of daily activities while driving long-term operational excellence. The Deputy Director leads large cross-functional teams, strengthens internal controls, supports enterprise initiatives, and ensures consistent alignment with regulatory expectations and the bank's strategic direction.
Essential Job Functions
Strategic Leadership & Operational Oversight
  • Drives oversight and execution of operational conversions, ensuring full readiness for system conversion, validating seamless integration into operations for both data and process conversion.
  • Serves as the senior leader for various operational units.
  • Translates the bank's strategic plan into actionable priorities within each operational area.
  • Monitors performance, KPIs, SLAs, and risk indicators across all reporting units.
  • Leads operational readiness for system enhancements, regulatory changes, and acquisition/conversion activities.
  • Identifies opportunities to streamline processes, reduce risk, and improve efficiency.
  • Appointed as sponsor of key operational projects
Internal Controls, Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensures operational processes comply with banking regulations
  • Oversees adherence to documentation standards, payment processing rules, and customer communication requirements.
  • Partners with Compliance to assess regulatory impacts to Operations and oversee and approve the required policy or procedural updates.
  • Maintains deep knowledgebase of payment operations, payment rails, and knowledge of connection points between payment platforms and core systems (SFTP, API, Batch, real-time)
  • Maintains working knowledge of NACHA operating rules, fraud controls for online banking, ACH, wire initiation and dual control.
  • Possesses a clear understanding of RDC and Mobile RDC, lockbox, treasury onboarding, Reg E., Reg CC, Reg D, UDAPP, escheatment laws, and debit card disputes.
  • Familiar with downstream customer effects of payment delays, rejects, or failures.
  • Conducts root-cause analysis for customer impacting payment incidents.
  • Maintains a robust control environment to support successful regulatory exams, internal audits, and external reviews.
  • Ensures training, guidance, and ongoing compliance expectations are firmly imbedded in daily operational workflows.
  • Oversees the timely closure and remediation of findings, gaps, and audit items.
  • Ensures adherence to segregation-of-duties and documentation standards.

People Leadership, Coaching & Culture
  • Leads, develops, and mentors managers across all reporting divisions.
  • Invests in developing bench strength and succession planning.
  • Builds high-performing teams through coaching, succession planning, and capability development.
  • Creates a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Supports talent acquisition, onboarding, and training strategies.
  • Drives team engagement and communication routines.

Operational Efficiency, Process Improvement & Technology Integration
  • Sponsor of automation and workflow redesign initiatives.
  • Partners with IT for enhancements across core systems and platforms.
  • Ensures system usage aligns with design and control expectations.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in related area of study or 10 or more years in Banking Operations leadership experience. Operations bank conversion experience a must.

Compensation & Benefits
Base pay: $150,000 - $195,000
Old Second is committed to fair and equitable pay practices. Pay is dependent upon the pay range and the incumbent's knowledge, skills and experience.
Officer Bonus Eligible: Eligible to participate in the Annual Officer Incentive plan with a target bonus up to 20% of base salary based various performance components.
